Afternoon
Continuing on from previous thread re our wiring issue - given we had got everything working ie indicators flashing as they should, hazard flashing as they should, dash lights illumniating as they should (but without satisfactorily finding an actual problem + obvious solution) I rewrapped the LH front loom, yesterday I put everything back together at the front of the vehicle.
So today went to test again in the barn before we were going to take Landy out on the road for a test run to check over a better distance before putting all the dash etc back together, RH indicator AOK with dash light, Hazards AOK but no dash light..... AND now when indicating Left, ALL indicators come on (though slightly dim) and dash light is as faint as faint can be.
Getting very p1ssed off and frustrated.

Anyhoo, any pointers would be much appreciated - and Nadelik lowen! (Happy Christmas 😄)

Yes - have unwrapped the new loom tape and retested - still the same. But I now need to unwrap the electrical tape that I wrapped around the cores of the loom and retest. Just cannot see how wrapping could have caused the problem, except that given that was the last thing I did then it points towards that. But how....?

I dont know.

But leave it unwrapped for a while.
I still think its an earth issue. either at the lights or dash.

J

Everything now completely unwrapped, cores all nicely separtated. Issue still exists......
Yes I used the Red Wolf tape as the outer wrap.

Going to leave it all unwrapped until we've solved it - or resort to an auto electrician.....

The Durite load/ballast resistors work well, had issues on trailers with pulsing indicators, and trucks with fast acting repeaters, other tucks with indicators staying on dimly, all solved with the resistors, ps 12v ones do not last long on 24v systems cough cough!

Is there a resistor any where? Early motors need 1 as the dash won’t flash & they don’t show in the dash.

When hazards are switched on the trailer light would flash on dash.(& switch if the bulb works)

Put a bulb in the indicator circuit & try again
Hi - without the LED indicators plugged in, with a normal bulb repeater plugged in the circuit, still get the same issue.
As said we've had the LEDs in place for 4 years or longer, no resistor was installed, we have had no problem up until this all started.
The RH circuit works fine - Dash light comes on as it should, LED indicator and normal bulb in repeater.
Problem comes when the LH indicator is actioned
Landy is 12v system

Could it be a faulty led then?
Have you got side repeaters as LEDs?
If you put a filament bulb instead of the faulty indicator does it work?
( just ruling out faults)
Thanks

If the LED was faulty wouldn’t that show up with the hazard activation? At the moment hazards work ( normal light level) the issue only happens when left turn is selected on the stalk.
Don’t think we have the original indicators - though might be on a dusty shelf somewhere- will check tomorrow.
Thanks

Ok - Hope everyone had a good Christmas Day and Boxing Day is going swimmingly..
Because this whole electrickery conundrum has been driving us NUTS over the last 48hours, today we did a bit of elimination and tested teh hazard switch - everything tested ok so the hazard switch is ok.

Took indicator stalk out of the equation - issue stays the same.

Removed dash light lamp/bulb - tested using indicator stalk - everything works as it should, Left get the LH indicators, Right get the RH indicators.

Can someone explain why this might be? I understand from previous answers that on Defenders such as ours with a single dash light with the 2 indicator symbols on it, that each indicator circuit acts as the earth (?) for the other side when the indicator stalk is used.

TIA

Looking at this wiring diagram posted on another LR forum I think this points to a problem with the wiring to and from the Hazard switch via the dash lamp - maybe some chaffing along the route

Earth, it always is where 'dim' lights are seen ...you have moved the bit that had a problem ...

Earths need to be taken off, cleaned, refitted Guten Tight ...

Have you a led flasher unit?
Have you one of these fitted? (I do have an MY85 with full led indicators) the bulb in the dash does not earth correctly on the early models.
But you have said all the indicators were working before

Have taken off the bulkhead earth, cleaned and refitted. Made no difference to the 'dim light' issue.

No do not have an LED earth fix - never had any issues prior to the indicator circuit blowing it's fuse last month. We have LED indicators (not repeaters) brake lights and side lights - not headlights. The LEDs were purchased from an LR dealer (Paddocks or Craddocks probably) over 4 years ago and they were a 'plug and play' - no mention of resistors or anything.

Will be checking everything behind the dash lights etc tomorrow.

Thanks for the input

Do they have an earth fitting at the bulbholder ?

I'm sure there's more than one earth connector at the front of a Defender ...
