I pulled the rear passenger side main lens off a little while ago and repaired a crack that had allowed water to get inside the lens - about 2" of water in there!

Anyway, whilst I was there I checked the filter arrangement for the on-board compressor for the rear air bags. Under the black cap, behind the lens, and under a black cap was a piece of sponge and then a piece of filter cloth. Unfortunately the sponge material had largely disintegrated - I removed it and it turned to crumbs (admittedly it was original from 2003!). Reminds me somewhat of the foam filter strip under the windscreen (my original strip lasted from 2003 until 2014 and I'm now on the second replacement strip (lasts only 3 years now!)).

Anyway, given the filter cloth looked in good nick I left that alone and just got an older car washing sponge and cut out a rough cylinder and plonked that in the compressor filter cap. I assume the sponge material that was in there was only meant to act as a coarse filter and/or absorb any moisture lest it make its way to the compressor? Not sure if the sponge might not let enough air through (although there are small gaps at the side) to the compressor?

Any thoughts? No problem with what I did?

By the way, I believe there is another section of the compressor filter down below the light and just underneath the rear bumper? Just checked and the whole assembly is available for sale c.AUD150 - part number RQB000540.

Will have to check (RAVE) the section down at the bumper bar.

That second part is not a filter just a piece of rubber to protect the pipe

Okay, makes sense, so under the black cap is a piece of foam and then a filtration material (cloth/felt). I guess if the pipe rubbed/chaffed further downstream and made a hole then the compressor would just preferentially draw in unfiltered and moist air? For what it is then, $150 seems a bit steep! Have put the cut piece of car wash sponge in there, so will see how it goes.

Always a lot of chaffing with looms and hoses on the Disco - might need to buy some nappy rash cream!:D

Yeah, spesshally under the bonnet!
I think that the little hatches under the wheel arches were put there so you could inspect and protect!
Anyways, split garden hose and cable ties work for me!:)

Removed the dense felt - black on top and light grey at the bottom, so it's done its job! Felt disc is around 1cm thick and 4cm in diameter. Washed in the sink with warm water and hand soap a couple of times and then rinsed well - water went very dirty grey so must have removed a fair bit of accumulated dirt/dust. Will leave it to dry for a few days. The filter is almost pure cream colour now - came up a treat!

Bit surprised with how dense the filter felt disc is as the second filter in the chain (the sponge filter appears to be a coarse pre-filter to protect the secondary felt filter from being blinded with coarser particles). The compressor must be sucking hard to draw air through both filters!

Anyway, kitchen sponge is a good idea along with cleaning the felt filter disc - beats paying AUD150!
