At last I have gotten around to completing some work that has been pending a long time.

Rocker covers - stripped off the tiny bit of black paint that was hanging on, cleaned outside and inside and re-painted (outside only of course).
New rocker gaskets.
Plenum chamber - cleaned inside and out and re-painted.
Throttle linkage mechanism stripped and cleaned (need to finish that).
Valley gasket removed and cleaned oil seepage on rear to transmission and at the front down over the timing cover to sump.
Torco lubed camshaft and pushrods at the rockers.
New water pump, gasket, hoses and SS clips.
New Thermostat (Genuine LR).
New brass radiator plug.
New coolant.
New serpentine belt.
New belt tensioner.
Cleaned alternator mounting bracket and alt, repaired small cable to alt itself.
Cleaned AC condenser mounting bracket, and condenser and added 2 new O rings.
Degreased as much as needed from valley gasket weepage.

All I need to look at now is the throttle linkage return spring. I think it is not as it should be, mainly as when I dismantled it it sprang off and I need to relocated it properly. Right now when I hit the accelerator the throttle sticks open.

I am sure there is more, but that will do for now.
Running smoothly now.
Cheers

Sounds like you have been having fun!!

Keep at it and you'll be assured of a sorted motor for a while!

Right well I cannot find what I have done wrong with the throttle linkage.
As soon as you touch the accelerator it sticks. Sticks around 1500-2000rpm. I know this is a linkage problem as it fell apart when I took it off the plenum.

Can anybody with a GEMS engine take a photo of their linkage and post it here? I may be able to see what is wrong. In the mean time here are a few pics of mine.

Thanks in advance

Is that thanks in advance of the pics ?

Return spring sorted out, all ok there now.
This morning I found a minor coolant leak by the header tank, tightened up a hose clip and all now seems ok. It must have been where I had disturbed it doing various jobs. Topped up.

Just dropped her off for the MOT now. Fingers crossed, and toes.
