Hey guys, I'm just wondering what the reasons are for lots of comp guys running Disco 2 axles. I assume it is because they are stronger, but what bit of them are stronger? Also, I've heard that they're wider meaning better stability. So, are these 'myths' true, are there any other reasons people fit them? Any information would be helpful. Also, can they be bolted straight onto a Disco 1? I'm thinking I may do a big build of my Disco all at once (and buy a second to use while it's off the road) so figure that it'd be best to do all the big jobs at once. Are there also any trade offs with fitting them? And do they still need the internals uprating. A set of 4.11 or 4.37 ratio Ashcroft ring and pinion would have to go in as I'm planning to run 33s day to day (General Grabbers) and 34s (Super Swamper LTBs) for grade 4-5 trips (the gnarliest ones!). The diffhead would probably be replaced with KAM manual Drop-In lockers or the new Eaton manual ELockers. Cheers guys
 
Yes they are stronger as standard, challenge trucks with big tyres break chrome swivels on the older type axle. I use them on my comp safari motor because they are lighter, also when trialing I get more steering lock because of the extra width, although it is a trade off with fitting through the gates.
You can also fit huge cv's like the Ashcroft one's, though Bowlers used standard cv's on there Dakar Wildcat cars and never broke one, that might be different on a challenge truck though.
you also get better brakes with D2 axles.The diffs are the same as the earlier axles and if you fit the D2 radius arms the bushes flex more so articulation is better.
To do the brackets at the chassis end I welded a tube in a cup and welded that onto the chassis then made a support bracket for the outside of the bolt.

As above, I am going to be using nissan patrol y61 axles on my ultra4 car as they are even stronger. That is if the guy making the cage ever finishes it....

So can I bolt them straight onto a stock D1 chassis? Is the diff pumpkin in the same spot so the propshaft doesn't need changing as I've heard (maybe wrongly) that they're different?
