Well, I've been putting up with the slight judder and whirring noise for about a year and half now, after towing all day Thursday and Friday in the rain, I selected low to park up for the night and the clutch was either on or off, there was hardly any easing, just a jerky leap forward however much a controlled the clutch pedal. There's still a bit of use in her yet, but I seriously need to order the parts and get her done as soon as a work quietens off.

Now, does anyone having any recommendations as to what make of clutch and flywheel to use? I don't want to use a 'solid' one as some suggest as I don't want any increased vibrations etc, so looking for a heads up really. I've replaced the clutch on a 2.25 and a 3.5 v8, so hopefully will go smoothly. Whilst the box is out is there anything anyone can think of that's worth replacing on a td5?

L.O.F. CLutches seem to be getting a good following. Might be worth a call to them.

Do you mean you will use a solid flywheel next time!?

Does anyone know the make of the oem clutch at all? Flywheel looks expensive! :(
 
i use the valeo kits, dual mass and clutch, plus push rod is often worth changing

Thanks James! Valeo was the name I'd seen but couldn't remember before I posted this thread. In your opinion is it worth changing the crank seal on the td5 whilst in that area, and is it worth replacing the clutch fork as a matter of course? Many thanks mate
 
only if crank seal is leaking , theres often oil coming from above, spigot bush is worth replacing
forks are bullet proof its the push rod seat in fork and rod itself that do suffer wear
 
A neighbour of mine sold his really clean TD5 Defender 90 last year because he'd had a heavy quote for a clutch replacement. Assuming you have to pay for the work to be done is this such a major expense on this model ?
 
My local garage quoted 300 quid in labour for the job on my disco. I’m pretty happy with that as it’s a bit of a beast of a job, fairly involved from what I have read.

I've honestly no idea bud as I do everything myself! I think garages sometimes make one hell of a mark up on parts such as the flywheel extra so I wouldn't be in the slightest surprised if a garage would charge up wards of £800 or so when it's easily £500 odd for a cambelt kit change on a car like a passat etc... when I initially saw one flywheel for £600 I did immediately think about taking tee engine out and putting my 3.5 v8 in, I'd have to rip out all electrics and get at mid 80's dash and binnacles, and a full loom.... I still haven't written the idea off tbh....
