Hi all, I've just bought a 2000 Disco 2 TD5 with 120,000 on the clock. Over all the car looks to be in far better condition than all the others we went to see and came from a guy who deals in Defenders. In fact he'd bought my Disco to nick the motor for a Defender but when he got the car home he fugured it was too good to break, certainly runs well and is relatively rust free for it's age. It's never had a tow bar fitted which seems unusual for a Disco.

Anyway, my question is about a noise it makes when the clutch peddle is depressed. It's a sort of screechy noise. We took the car straight back to the guy we bought it off and he said it's the clutch release bearing (which sounds feasible to me) and said it was due to the car standing. He said it would settle down after the car was driven and it has quietened down but is still there. It's intermittent and only happens when the clutch is depressed.
Do you guys think it's something I should worry about? I can either go and moan at the guy as he did say he'd noticed it but forgot to mention it when we were asking questions. Another option is that we fix it as a release bearing is relatively cheap, we have the tools and know how even if I don't fancy dropping that big lump of a gearbox and transfer box out on the drive! Oh, the clutch seems good and works fine, it's just that awful noise... bit embarassing at the traffic lights too:eek:

don't worry about it! unless you are prepared for the cost of everything else whilst you have the box out, when did it have a clutch? fly wheel, spigot bearing and release bearing, then it will need bleeding back up, slave cylinder and master cylinder may need changing!
mine has a spigot squeal now and again as i don't use it often enough, once warm i never hear it again, will do it all when it needs a clutch but until i will ignore it!

Thanks for the advice DDC. There is an oil leak from the rear crankshaft oil seal which the seller neglected to mention too so we will have the box out when we have a weekend free but it's nice the be reassured that it is one of those quirky noises and nothing to have kittens about.

Hi PV, it'll almost certainly be the bronze spigot bearing causing the noise. If you are going to have to gearbox assembly off to replace the rear crankshaft seal, doing the new spigot bearing at the same time would be ideal.

The bearing itself is only £2-3 pounds BUT needs soaking in oil before installation. Get one now and put it in a plastic box full of engine oil and leave for a week.

Cheers
Dave

Thanks Dave, luckily my business is restoring vintage British bikes so bronze bushes are the order of the day. The only thing which worries me is the price of DMF's if there's a problem in that area. The rest of the prices for bits are pleasantly not ott expensive... oh and that crank pulley with the tv damper, £400!!!!!

We do have trade accounts with car parts companies but because we've only had the car less than a week so we haven't been able to check what the prices are like. Most bits are pretty reasonable but that pulley is nearly as much as a turbo!

when you search up on here about most subjects, there is usually someone who does it day to day or has vast experience about it, JM is very knowledgeable in this, most will tell you on the clutch dept do not go to the cheapest, use a good make,

the easy way to tell if its spigot bus or not is that the noise will disappear if pedals fully depressed, if its spigot

I never fit cheap clutch kits as I've been in the business too long not to know they're a false economy. I learned that lesson about 30 years ago when I fitted a nasty pattern on a customer bought himself. The one I have lined up is a Valeo which I believe is OEM, not dirt cheap but with our discount a more than reasonable price I thought. I will check the clutch operating fork is the modified and am possibly thinking of fitting the heavey duty release bearing.... any thoughts welcome.

One thing I would like to ask about is Britparts. I keep seeing people saying that they don't like them and I was wondering what the issue was.

Ah, thanks JM. The noise mustn't be the spigot bush then as it tends to happen when the clutch is depressed not released. I'm pretty sure it's the release bearing but I think I'll go to town and change the lot, spigot bearing and clutch when I sort out the crank seal. Lots of people keep saying that the noise is virtually normal but I find it hard to believe that most people would put up with it in what is a luxury vehicle.

Funny thing is that when we bought the car it was because we try to buy British (our business is restoring British vintage and classic motorcycles) and we liked the way it drove and looked. I swore I wouldn't even think about going off road. Now I'm looking to fix up the centre diff lock and struggling not to find a place to try her out lol

i have a replacement solid steel flywheel and clutch kit and release bearing i might be persuaded to sell,if the price is right.:)

Let Me know how much you'd like for it and what make it is and I'll see if it's better than the trade price I have from our supplier gemsdad. Also does anyone know what effect replacing the DMF has to the feel of the car etc?

spigot bush makes a noise when clutch is depressed but not fully, usually worse in reverse as your feathering the clutch
