My TD5 has developed a strange clutch or gearbox noise that comes and goes without any pattern.
Cold or hot does not seem to make any difference and the noise occurs typically once every 20 miles or so (I only do short journeys).
The only time the noise happens is when I have depressed the clutch ready to change gear (but before actually moving the gear lever). The noise is akin to the crunching of gears as if I was changing gear when the clutch had not properly disengaged. The thing is, the noise does not go away if I release the clutch. Only changing gear seems to clear the noise and, when I do change gear, there is some resistance (again, as if the clutch was not fully disengaged).
What can cause a gear crunching noise on depressing the clutch even though the gearbox remains in the gear which was not making any noise before I depressed the clutch?
I would add, the car is new to me. I have just changed the gearbox oil (used MTF94). The old oil, alarmingly, had a brass metallic look about it when I drained it and the issue was just the same either side of the oil change (actually, it may be slightly worse with the new oil).
Logic tells me this can only be clutch, flywheel or release bearing related but, why the brass coloured oil?
I may also have a slightly weeping fuel regulator (although not looked into this thoroughly) as, the bell housing outer surface looked moist with oil or fuel.
Any ideas?
