The clutch hydraulics have failed on my Td4 and I understand that the slave cylinder needs replacing. Since this requires removal of the gearbox, I may as well replace the clutch (55k). However, I am informed that it is recommended that the master cylinder will require replacing as well. Total bill is pretty much £1000. :eek: Anyone know whether total replacement of hydraulics is required, or whether there are any lower cost options?

Even worse, there is a possibility that fluid may have compromised the rubber compound on the flywheel and this will cost me £600 on top. It will be cheaper to scrap at this rate! Any help on likelihood of this being a problem?

I have two more prices from independents. One wants £810 for master, slave and clutch and I have a quote of £590 for the same from Mr Clutch (£420 without the Master).

I'm now uncertain as to whether or not it is good practice to replace the master at the same time as the slave. Both the Landy dealer and one independent says 'yes' but for different reasons. Mr Clutch says there is no need to replace the Master and that his colleague at a nearby different Landy dealer says the same.

Do I need to replace the Master at the same time and, if so, why?

Well i would say no, but i dont know the complete story. . .is the slave u/s or have you got air in system from say a damaged pipe, its true that you have to remove the gearbox to change the slave [crap design] but afore yer go mad,and i need back up here, fink the bleed on the slave can be got at[without removal] are yer sure this has not been correctly tightened up int past? well worth an investigation. . . both the slave and master are called sealed fer life,wot this means is, if its faulty yer have to fit a new un,but and fink i'm correct on this you can get piston rubbers for the master, , ,to bleed or re bleed this system you have to do er pressure bleed from the master [you can buy diy pressure bleed kits], best oh luck. . . . .:)
 
Think you are being robbed for the clutch overhaul. Haynes manual give the job (including gearbox/IRD removal) 4stars which is do-able by any competent mechanic

As ming says the clutch is sealed for life. if terminal then you have to replace master and slave cylinder together.

Think they were trying to pull a fast one about the flywheel.
 
Here is an update for anyone who has similar issues with the clutch slave cylinder.
With more time, I would happily have done the work myself and I doubt it takes the 6 or 6.5 hours listed by LR or the 8 hours quoted by an independent.
Car was finally repaired by Mr Clutch in Aldershot. I highly recommend Ken who was most helpful and went out of his way to verify what was required. He is helped by having Muddy Trax (Phil), a Land Rover specialist, next door who supplies the parts and some extra know how!
Ken replaced the slave and did the clutch at the same time. It is clearly NOT necessary to replace the Master as well. Total cost £420. THis compared to £880 from the lowest cost authorised LR repairer (the main dealer was even more expensive) and around £800 from an independent 4x4 garage, all of whom insisted the Master had to be replaced as well. Each garage gave a different reason, maintaining either that it was impossible to bleed, that the Master would go immediately after or that the Master was causing the Slave to fail.
There is confusion here as both the petrol and old diesel do have to have Master and Slave replaced together. If the Master goes down the road, I will replace separately. If the Slave goes within 12 months, it is covered under warranty. If it lasts 12 months, it should last 13 +!
Seems there is a possiblility that Flywheel can develop movement taking it outside acceptable tolerance levels. Given that this was a £600 job on its own, I am glad that mine was OK.
