Well it looks like my low biting point on my clutch is a hydralic problem. Now its very difficult to get gears, pumping pedal makes no difference. Cant see any fluid in drivers footwell.

So I am guessing its a slave cylinder (2001 td4). I am capable of doing the job but I dont know if I can be bothered as it seems a long job.

So first off any ideas the cheapest place to get master and slave cylinder? No rush so mail order fine.

I know its a long shot but can anyone recommend a garage local to Blackpool that would do the repair without taking the mickey?

Lastly I am guessing its probably best to replace the clutch at the same time but is there anything else that should be changed as a precaution as the gearbox is coming out?

Thanks for any help you can give.

thinly veiled spam me thinks, judging by the signature with no less than 6 links, 5 of which point straight to "Cleveland Court" apartments/flats etc.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and offer any help.

You dont have to read the links or visit the sites. The links arent against any forum rules and if the mods want I will remove them.

I am not trying to spam, just to get some assistance with my Freelander.

Yes there are links to my business, and 3 links to sites about Blackpool. Running your own business is difficult and I do make use of any opportunities I can to promote my business, I would be stupid not to.
Bottom line is I have a problem with my Freelander and would welcome assistance.

If the site owners wanted to they could show more ads from Google and earn more revenue.

we had this before:eek: - my understanding is that links in a sig are ok, providing the owner dont try and push them, else a financial contribution is required.
Loads of peeps have links in their sigs - how do we know if, for example, Pikey mite have a financial involvement in his links? We dont!

i have this with my td4 2002 FL i havechanged the cylinder(as one day it wouldnt go into gear at all!) but now it is still really low biting point! i think it mya bethe clutch plate aswell anyidears or common probs, it may be best to do both m8,
oh and cylinder from landrover £50 + vat

cnt remember if it was master or slave cylinder? it must have been the easyer one to change as it didnt take him long.

Cheers for that. I have had bit of an investigation today. I tried to bleed the hydraulics, very difficult to get at bleed nipple. So I took off the sump guard thing. Gave it a bleed but still the same, very low biting point and difficult to engage gears. But I did poke my finger into the holes in bottom of bell housing. All dry and no signs of any fluid leaks!

So I am leaning towards a master cylinder problem. I will havent seen any wet patches in drivers footwell but I think I will have a good look tomorrow.

Hopefully I will find a puddle around master cylinder boot. Then I can just change master cylinder.

Cheers.

int yu sposed to change the master and slave as a pair?

Well after reading about every post abouut Freelander clutches I think the 1.8 petrol comes as an assembly (master + slave + connected pipe) and already filled with fluid plus best to get a slave cylinder bracket (£10) as they go as well. Also lubricate the rod where it goes through the bellhousing.
The td4 has a slave cylinder inside the bell housing and a seperate master cylinder. The two come pre filled with fluid but have a quick release connector. So you can just change one. As the slave on a td4 requires Gearbox, IRD, and other bits to be removed its a long job, so best to change clutch at same time.

So as I dont have any visible fluid leaking from bell housing I am hoping its the master cylinder.

Yuo just killed any ideas I had (not many) of gettin' aTd4. Slave cylinder change requires bellhousing/gerbox removal!!! They really are trying to stop us working on them.

who designs these fookin things - a first year apprentice could do a better job with his eyes closed and a broken pencil!

Accountants!!!!!(Sorry not knocking accountants)
Remember the good old mk2 astra? You could change a clutch in 30mins and have time for a tea break! But that didnt make VX any money in servicing costs.
I recon that the manufacturers only make 10% on selling a car and plan on making a lot more on servicing! I had a vectra, alternator belt was squeeling so I thought easy job just tighten alternator or replace belt. But No they put a stupid hydraulic auto adjuster on instead of a 5p bolt to swing the alternator. Result £70 for a new hydraulic adjuster!

If it were just down to engineers to design car we would be much better off.

Hi Ched,
Try Preesall garage near fleetwood, bought my TD4 fro them and they are really cheap and good, They only deal with 4x4's.

Cheers for that. Spoke to them earlier today as thats where I got my td4. John the mechanic guy was very helpful. As it goes they also sell parts mail order. After a chat with John I have ordered a master cyl from them. Hopefully that will cure it, I am speaking to them tomorrow to work out fastest way to get master cylinder.
I spoke to a couple of other mechanics and they basically all said replace master first as its easy and relatively cheap. They also said that the master cylinder doesnt have to leak in the footwell to be faulty. It can just fail and not leak just not push fluid. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that will sort it.

sorry for any offence old chap, certainly none meant. Unfortunately in this instance I was unable to offer any assistance as my Td4 is an auto and doesn't have master/slave cylinder. I hope that you find the solution to your problem and a local garage that can help.

Non taken mate.
I have a master cylinder on its way and hopefully that should sort it.
Just out of interest what mpg do you get from the td4 auto?

generally around the 30 mark. round town, ladders on roof, boot full of tools and spares, making around 25 to 28. Recently though on week of long runs, all a roads and motorways was getting 34.

if you have now joy at pressall garage which are the dog bolairicks..what they dont know about 4x4s you can write on a postage stamp... pop and see colin at kwik fit on preston new rd. he looks after mine , and his lad has one too, knows his onions.....

Cheers for that. Pressalls are getting me a master cyl and it should arrive Wed or Thursday. Either their supplier is delivering or they are going to 'pop' it over :) . I have a tarpaulin ready to give me a bit of protection from rain, as I have to refit sump guard thing and some of the inlet pipework and unfortunately dont have a garage.:(
So fingers crossed I will have it sorted shortly after it arrives. If that doesn't fix it it will be going to them for a slave and clutch! But speaking to John at Preesalls I do think its 80% probability its master cyl as I cant find any traces of fluid at bell housing end of things. But then again I cant find any fluid in drivers footwell but John said that can happen.

PS. I sent you a PM regarding Maplins central locking fix, could you have a quick look and see if I am on the right track? Cheers.

must be a day for clutches. hydraulic gone on mine. £150 @ garage & then possibly clutch...
Hopefully its not a td4.
Seems like the clutch hydraulics go way before the actual clutches but if its a td4 to change slave you need gearbox out so may as well do clutch at same time.

Hopefully its just hydraulics.
