My clutch has gone. Master cylinder empty except for a grey sludge in the bottom. Fluid on clutch pedal - what kind of a job is this? Suitable for complete beginner? If not, any ideas on what the garage would charge to fix it?

Master cylinder isn't that hard to replace - provided you read the manual carefully ;)

Bleeding the clutch afterwards is a bit of a pain in the goolies, two person job unless you've got access to pressure bleeding kit - best with three so you've got someone to watch the level in the new master cylinder, while someone else pumps the clutch and some luckless soul can lie underneath and open and close the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder.

Cheers,

Hello, just done mine a couple of weeks ago. I’ve bled bike brake systems in the past so I was used to the process of bleeding the system. It was still a pain in the arse, don’t be gentle with it pump it hard (at least I had to with mine). The access to the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder is tight (exhausts and PTO linkage are in the way if you have one).

Make sure you know how to bleed the system. If you don’t know how, then practice on what you have until you’re sure you know how to bleed the system. I used a one man bleed kit that was almost useless. (Although it was slightly more use than my lovely wife).

The Haynes manual and the posts on here were all I needed to do the job.

Filthy, discussing job. DOT fluid and old oil and muck up to my elbows. Still can’t get mi hands clean.

Magic......

I had a right **** of a job bleeding the clutch. Then I realized the slave cylinder was pointing down hill so the air wouldnt come out, all I did was drive the nearside front wheel up a ramp open the bleed nipple and it practically bled itself.

Yeah I have found just opening it and just letting it run bleeds it, a little touch of the pedal to blast the first lot through helps to get it going.

He's got a LandRover and he's worried about dirty hands !!!

Ey I got Comma DOT 4 or 5, cant remember which, on my hands when I redid my calipers. I was blathered in the stuff and don't have soft office wallers hands, any how my hands went all red and inflamed and felt all kind of tingly. Just thought I'd share that with you.
