Hi - master cylinder is slowly leaking and old oil was black and mucky. Is it best to change the whole master/slave cylinders or replace the seals? Do the cylinders just keep on going or do they fail in other ways? Thanks
 
They are both relatively easy to get at, more so if you have a ramp to get at the slave.
The cylinders are pretty robust but can corrode (like anything really).
Regular fluid changes (annually) keeps it clean however it does discolour reasonably quickly.

TRW cost arounf £40, Bearmach £25 and Britpart £20 for the pair.
Get a new flexipipe too (they are around £9)

WHy bother doing the seals when a new slave cylinder is so cheap? You still risk failure even after adding new seals as the inside of the slave may be worn or pitted and it will fail again.
 
Always new. Very likely the old ones cylinder has some corrosion in that’ll knacker the new seals. That said, if you’re trying to save every last penny, it’s not hard to rebuild them, as long as you take the time to check the cylinder condition
 
Change the pair for new aftermarket , they are cheap. Fairly easy to fit, I think I reverse bled mine with an oil can.
