Hi all

My beloved has developed a further problem, not quite sure how to explain but here goes,
Lately she;s developed this sort of rumbling noise and it feels rough to drive. The gear stick vibrates when in gear (all gears)and I can also feel it in the driving seat as well. I think it may be down to one of the props being out of true.
I had intended to get it looked at but, I had to do a 100 mile round trip the other day which went fine until I had to stop at the traffic lights near home, I come to a stand still and about 10 seconds after I'd stopped I heard a clunk from underneath and the car shuddered,in fact it felt like someone had bumped into my tow bar, (they hadn't) so I put it in gear but it didn't want to move, so I took it out of gear and then back in again and when I set off I could hear a grinding / scraping noise from underneath, and the scraping went faster with acceleration.
Luckily I was round the corner from home and its now parked up.
I'm going to call the garage tomorrow to see if they will have a look but wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom for me.

could be a uj as well as many other things like dual mass flywheel or gear box bearing failing to hand brake shoes grabbing drum

Thanks for the info, is there anything I can do to try and pin point the problem? or should I just put my trust in the garage mechanic? it sounds like I may be at the beginning of a process of elimination trail
 
Well you can do a lot just by ratting things and looking underneath. Does any drive seem to be getting out of the gearbox to the props? There are various toothed and splined items that wear and can start jumping eventually, such as where the halfshafts go into the drive flanges on the hubs, or the bit that transmits the drive between the main gearbox and the transfer box. You could even have broken a half shaft and be hearing the broken ends rubbing together. My first port of call for vibration in the driveline would be the propshafts as those little cup and needle roller bearings in the universal joints seem to wear out regularly. As regards the lack of drive, make sure that the transfer box lever is fully engaging high and low. I suffered an embarrassing loss of motion at some traffic lights a few weeks ago and it took a little while to work out that it had slipped part way into neutral and was allowing the gears (or more probably the dogs) to jump. Meanwhile the lights were changing and people behind were beeping and men in Audis with mobile phones clasped to their ears were accelerating past me aggressively.
 
Sounds like the handbrake shoes to me sticking in the drum causing the vibration and grinding, doesnt sound like a prop problem. Try slacking them off see if it helps at all.

Yes there is drive to the props, but thats the extent of my knowledge base. When you start mentioning "half shafts" and stuff I'm afraid you loose me, although I've had all hubs and wheel bearings changed plus brakes and disks all round in the last 6 months.
Its a pain in the proverbial when I haven't got a clue what I'm talking about, but not to worry, I do like the old girl.

sounds like a job for the mechanic, I'll drop it off at the garage first thing and let him have a look, hopefully when I go back he won't be huffing and shaking his head while scratching his chin (usually a sure sign of an impending empty wallet)

If I get it sorted I'll let you all know what it was, if not I'll be back on pleading for more help.
 
The half shafts are in your axles. They are the shaft that transmit the power from the differential to the wheels, commonly referred to as half shafts because half a shaft goes to one wheel and another goes to the opposite wheel.

Have you taken her to the Doctor?
Does she rumble during the night?

my beloved rumbles in the night, but its nowt to do with knackered universal joints.....
 
Hi all

Got the Landy back from my mechanic last night, he said he put it onto the ramps and whilst he was walking underneath it to check props, uj's, half shafts and owt else it tried to engage a gear or drive of some sort. turns out that the gear box had little to no oil in it and what oil was in was sludge and a little water, but no shards of metal So he thinks it will be Ok, so he has flushed the gear box through and refilled with oil.
I haven;t heard the clunking noise since and it hasn't tried to engage gear or anything either so all seems fine (for now anyway).
I think I may have just dodged an expensive bullet.

witty banter or not, I still have no idea what vehicle it is, let alone which gearbox you have.
box run without oil wont last long, specially its had sludgy stuff in it.
didn't the gearbox overtemp light flash on the screen?

2.5 TD.

Just done a 450 mile round trip today without incident or clunking. All gears are fine,
