hi. im new to this fantastic site and wondered if anyone could help me...On jan 5th i drove my family in my freelander to gatwick airport from northampton to catch our flight to tenerife for 35 days holiday, 8 miles from gatwick airport a clunking sound started what seemed to be coming from under the car, i pulled onto the hard shoulder as there was no way i could drive it. I phone green flag and they dragged our baby onto the recovery van and took us to gatwick where we could catch our flights, in the meantime they took my landy back to northampton outside my home. Whilst iv been away nobody has looked at her and im about to start taking her to bits, the recovery mechanic said that the drive was all intact so it wasnt that, I was wondering has this happened to anyone elses Freelander on here and could use any advice , The only hints that i can give are that when driving it has an almost unbearable clunking noise .

Metal ring around vibration damper half way along prop shaft breaks loose and rattle around the prop. My mate held his back on with cable ties!!! Easy to check and cheap to fix if this is your problem.

I have spent the day under her and have discovered that the Gi coupling has disintergrated (first joint after IRD) I have been told that this is not replacable is that true if not where can I get one all help greatly appreciated:confused:

Do you mean the UJ where the prop joins onto the VCU, or the CV joint between the prop and the IRD??

Point to it, if it helps!

I think you'll find it's the CV / tripod joint that links the IRD to the front prop.

Mine went at about 65K , removed the front prop to get rid of the vibration.

AFAIK you can't get hold of the tripod joint in order to simply replace, you'll need to buy a whole front propshaft - low end prices are around £130 from memory.

Cheers all it is the CV/ IRD joint I dismantled the CV joint then supported the prop with some luggage strap drove the girlie up the road and that seams to have resolved the clacking so it looks like a Replacement Prop can you remove the front half without taking the whole assemble down (front prop /VCU /rear prop shafts)?

Yeah you can take the front prop (5) off at the UJ where it mates with the VCU (4).

Luggage strap? Ingenious. I have visions of the strap reaching around the doors and onto the roof, tied off on the top like a big bow in a ribbon. 'Course, you'd have to climb in and out through the back doors.

Cheers

If its the UJ (1) it can be serviced, although it can be a pig to do. If its the coupling (5) it looks like a new prop shaft:( :(

I actually live on Billing Aquadrome in Northampton (Home of the land rover show).. If only it had been end of july i would have been unindated with landy enthusiasts offering help and wouldnt have needed to bother you all, you have all been a great help and i appreciate it no end. I might have to take the luggage bow off before the next show i think Blippie, i might get laughed at and lets face it, its not very macho is it ..lol
