Oh dear once again I haven't driven the Freelander 04 TD4) for a while I really should drive it more just to check.
A few days back I could smell that old familiar smell of diesel just like being back on the tank park with Chieftains. Slight diesel leak from somewhere I didn't have a chance to try and trace it but the MOT was booked in for today I thought I'd leave it. Also on driving it I discovered turning to the right on some corners was resulting in a clunk. I sometimes wonder why I ask. "How long has it been making that clunk turning right" I asked? "What clunk noise?" was the somewhat expected reply. "That clunk noise it's just made as I turned right" I hopefully replied. Knowing I was getting nowhere fast I gave up. A quick check over yesterday revealed the drivers side wiper blade was coming loose as I'd used the wrong plastic clip on the wiper arm hook when I'd recently replaced it.
So MOT normally I can get a look underneath as I used to live two doors down from the garage owner however I had to drop it off and go back to the inlaws. MOT done and passed, advisory on some corrosion on brake pipes which we had last year. There is wear on the o/s front suspension ball joint making the clunk. Also I asked if they could have a look for the diesel leak, apparently number 1 injector is leaking slightly. As it's done 67K is that normal I've never had an injector start leaking on any other car?

It may only have done 67K miles - but it is 11 years old so things do just age. If it was an L Series I'd say check the leak back hoses as they do degrade and are a common item to need replacing - not sure with TD4.

So the Freelander went off to the injection specialist yesterday. It transpires the injector was not guilty but in fact the fuel injector pump was, which of course worked out more expensive to fix. As the car is needed we agreed to let them replace the pump and to be fair it was fixed to collect by 15:00 Looking at the threads on here regarding the pump there it would have been a massive pain to fix at home,. half our drive is up due to work we've been doing, I don't like working on vehicles in near zero temperatures since I left the Army and we would have needed to get hold of the "special" tool. All there is to fix in the immediate future now is the lower offside ball joint.
