There's always some play, a lot depends how much?

Where do you mean there's no transmission fluid? If you mean the diff then yes, that won't help. I'd suggest you get some EP 80 or 90 and refill the diff. Open the filler hole first, as it can sometimes be a bitch to do so ... and if you've opened the drainer first and lost all fluids then you can't use the landy to get help!

it wont help.

How much rotational play is there? I think up to about 1/4 of a turn is fine.

Bear in mind these are land rovers, they cannot be compared to a normal car. If you think about it, think just how many gears and splined drives there are in one. Splined drive from the clutch, main g earbox, splined drive into the transfer box, then gears, then rotational sliding shafts to the diff, with splines on the input flange, then gears in the diff, then splines on the ends of the halfshafts (both ends) and then to the wheels.

Compare that to a normal FWD car, with soo much less!

So expect some free play.

its probly less than 1/4 play, and it was the filler plug i checked, im going to take it to land ranger in atherton tmz and get some fluid
cheers for replys
