Six months ago I bought a 19 year old freelander v6 mk1. I had heard about the reliability issues but since it was cheap I gave it a go. Well as you would expect there have been some/several issues but I cannot help still liking the car which is my daily transport.
Latest issue is the transmission/ rear axle? giving an almighty clank and judder as it goes into top gear. This gets better as it warms up. I am pretty sure that the auto fluid has never been changed so I am hoping that this is a quick fix. Does anybody else have experience of this problem?

Thanks Joe

It is known for the VCU to seize and cause damage to the rear axle and/or the IRD..

However consiering it only happens in top gear i'd hazard it is the torque converter lockup clutch juddering.

A fluid change and a sachet of Dr Tranny shudder fix should help..

Change the transmission fluid. But harness in changing can be down to failed duty solenoids. When these fail, the gears can really slam in, causing a shockwave through the whole transmission, which normally causes the rear diff to thump.
