Guys,

This subject has probably been covered countless times in the past, but I have a clonking noise coming from the front of my TD4. It only happens (or I only hear it) when initially setting off and turning the steering right or left. I have tried to have a look under the front at all the steering linkages etc, but the frustrating thing is there is nothing abviously wrong with any of the joints:confused:.

Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on what could be causing this. Any help/advice is appreciated.

Thanks

i had this it was my drop links £30 for both sides delphi ones dont buy cheap ones easy job

I had a 'clonking' noise from the front right a few weeks ago that was only there at slow speeds and when the wheel was moved slightly left/ right. No other symptoms and car was fine to drive normally. It then developed into a clonking noise with a notchy feeling in the steering wheel under the conditions above. All joints etc were find and it drove me mad for a while. I eventually traced it to the front R/H top mount. It was causing the front spring to jump when the steering wheel was moved to the 2 o`clock position then back to centre. This was visible and i could obviously feel it when i was given a hand by a mate.

The top mount was rusted (as was the plate it sits on at the top of the spring) but the bearing was good. I knocked the rust off, cleaned it up well and greased it and have had no problems since.

Maybe worth a 2 second check. Cheers

I had a strange knocking noise. All bushes were fine, drop links were good then after a while looking underneath I noticed the anti roll bar had moved sideways, there is a little bit of plastic that breaks off that is supposed to hold it in place. The noise would only come under certain conditions because it was the roll bar hitting against the subframe.

Prob not the same as you but I have heard of it a few times. Worth a check

Thanks Guys,
Not been on for a while, but I have traecd the clonking noise. While putting my off road tyres on at the weekend I got the misses to turn steering wheel and saw that the spring was jumping in the top mount, looks like I might have to drop the suspension off sooner than I wanted to. Never mind, on the plus side - time for that 2" lift kit me thinks:D
