3.9i v8 petrol, disco 1 300 1995 auto.

Went to turn the engine on, all I get is a rapid clicking. The starter motor doesn't engage, the engine doesn't turnover, just the clicking sound...

Any ideas?

Had a search hereabouts but nothing obvious.

Remedy 1x set of jump leads and another vehicle to jump it from.

Then you need to see if the battery is holding charge or the alternator is failing.

Common fault is battery for this time of year

if its not the battery its most likely a sticky solenoid... see if you can get to it and give it a tap...

dont know about on these cars but normally you can just rip it off give it a clean and its sorted!

I maybe talking out of my ar*e here, but here goes. On Rover Cars they all had the same type of starter motor..Denso i think. The symtom was turn the key and clickclick. I got a kit off e*ay for about £10. to replace the contacts in the solenoid. P*SS EASY JOB TO DO! I'm sure that its the same type of motor. If your battery is in good condition and it does point to the motor i'll dig out the bill and post up the seller.

Only had this symptom twice with my disco, both times it was due to a flat battery which required replacing.

The solenoid problem gives you one click when you turn the key. Battery is multiple clicks. As has been said, you have a flat battery sir!

Charge it up and see if it holds a charge. If not, get a new 'un. Try and soldier on with a dodgy battery as the weather deteriorates and it will let you down, usually in the most awkward place. When you've got one, check it's charging.

Get yourself a multimeter then you can check your battery and alt before splashing out.

Had a similar issue a while back, sometimes was fine other times click click click .........nearly drove me mad, always seemed to do it in the worst possible situations and I couldnt find anything wrong.

Finally tracked it down to corrosion in the main feed cable from the battery causing resistance and occasional voltage drop

Try a jump start, if that works its your battery, if it dont its your starter motor

If its your battery you won't have any other electrics working to well either ie interior lights horn etc

That may depend on how flat the battery is, but normally on a V8 access can still be gained via central locking, interior lights etc etc still work there's just not enough current in the battery to turn the engine.

True but I found on my classic that if the battery was flat not all the doors would unlock which was a good indication

Had a flat battery on my disco from not being run for over 3 months all locks and lights worked fine just not enough amps to turn the engine over

probably......BUT......when I had a dodgy cable she would fire up every time with a jump.

Best to be sure before splashing out on a battery just to find tis not the problem.........like I did

Well, jump started OK so looks like the battery is fooked. Interior lights and central locking still worked which is why I hadn't twigged the blindingly obvious (last time everything stopped working).

Thanks to everyone for advice and tips.
