I seem to have a clicking noise coming from the drivers front wheel. It makes no noise under acceleration or when I apply the brake. I put new pads on the other day. I dont think I have a stone stuck in the tyre as I checked that yesterday. Also there is a bit of rattling when free wheeling and go over a bump. Any ideas guys?

Also do those anti rattle springs make much difference to the pads? I dont have any fitted and when I go over bumps etc whilst freewheeling I can hear rattling like it may be the pads? Plus with the cv joint I thought that clicked continuously?

Jack a wheel up and give it a kick - you might get the pads to rattle, if so, then there's your solution.

I always thought that CV joints only click when they're worn...

A D1 has swivel balls like a 'fender doesn't it?

EDIT: Have you checked for a broken spring? My old Astra developed a rattle, turned out to be a broken spring. It was broken near the top so it wasn't immediately visible and didn't affect the ride height by much...

10 spline or 24?

I've got 10 spline cvs going as paperweights here so you can have one very cheap if needed

Yeah it's a bit complex as there were various variations of 10 spline axle depending on vehicle but 10 spline disco was same as 10 spline RRC and yes it is regards the splines on the halfshaft at the diff end

Depends on the noise mate a man that knows can tell by listening but generally speaking clicking on turning is CV

Pretty certain thats not your cv then. in fact, its not your cv.

cvs are noisy on full lock and more so when under load.

there isnt much that can rattle but it could easily be the pads.

the springs are there to keep the pads in the calipers snugly, but i ran my split pin calipers with hole type (for spring&pin calipers) pads for a while becuase i got sent the wrong ones and they were sweet, with no rattling

you will be able to tell if the pads are loose cos they will be, urm, loose!

The pads do seem loose. As you look at them from the wheel there is a fair bit of side to side movement. I may have to buy the springs. Also there is a bit of top to bottom movement with the tyre on which may suggest wheel bearing? Might be worth giving it a bit more grease and a nip up?

from where im sitting, it sounds like you need to get balls deep into that axle and go through it, check swivel preload, check wheel bearings, check/improve caliper pistons and fit new pad retaining kit.

RAS!

no theyre way out mate

to be honest, with twin circuit calipers i would have thought youd be on split pins

those pads are simply too high up in the caliper as far as i can see

however, unless some fool has drilled them out to take pins, the split pin calipers have much smaller holes as the splits are thinner

i mean i was expecting like 0.5-1.0mm of play!

Ras? So I should have the pads with a single tong in the middle? Theres far too much side to side play? Would that explain the rattling?

Ras, its an exclamation :p

anyway

im not sure

afaik the pads are all the same size at the outer extremities so either pad should fit in the caliper per se

BUT

one with the tab in the middle is for split pins

one with the holes is for pins

i have a feeling that your pads might be too high in the caliper, causing play

i have however run pin/hole pads in split pin/tab calipers before and they were ok

i used hole pads and just used split pins through the holes, no problem really

im wondering mainly if someone has drilled the calipers to take pins and that why the pads are now in the wrong position?
