Is there a way of cleaning out the bellhousing on Series 3 without splitting the engine and box? I've just changed the slave and found everything full of oily sand!

NO ! Has it got the wading plug fitted ? Sounds like someone has dunked it and not bothered to remove the plug and drain it. Don't fret about it the engine or gearbox will have to come out one day so do it then. If it is a three bearing engine the rear main seal will most likely need doing, best of luck with it if a three bearing they are a bit hit and miss......

Thanks! It was an Ebay purchase by son in law, last ran 4 yrs ago, spent 5 yrs in a field prior to that! However, got it started last night, so quite smug now.

Hmm, you could take the inspection plate off and flush it out with brake cleaner but you run the risk of removing the lubricant from the release bearing and clutch fork. If the worst case scenario is taking off the gearbox you'd probably replace the clutch in its entirety anyway so it might be worth a go.
