Hi Guys,

I'm just wondering if its worth getting my td6 chipped to improve fuel economy.
I know that these are big trucks and if I wanted fuel economy I'd have bought a lupo blue motion, however 25mpg on a motorway run and 17 round town...........theres got to be a way to get it slightly better??
If its not worth it then thats fine, but I wanted to ask the question.
Cheers

It's a 3litre lump with 2.5tonne of car !
What are you expecting ??

Yes get it chipped, but you will find it will start costing more in fuel as the new found performance will make your right foot very heavy ;) lol

Well worth it though :)

+1 to both the above...

The GM Gearbox is a weak point on standard TD6 - increase the torque output and you seriously reduce its life!

I understand you comments about 'if I wanted econmy...blah blah blah..' and I think 17-25 is resonable....you chose a Range Rover - you expect Range Rover running cost.....simple.

Gold Rover put it well the other day about people who buy Range Rovers then moan/baulk at the cost of running them....yes they are expensive to run, but that is a Range Rover for you!

Are you using both feet on the accelerator? I whinge because I lost 2mpg after a new fuel pump but I still get 19/20mpg around town and 30/31mpg on a motorway run.

I have considered getting a chip but shortening the gearbox life feels a big price to pay. We didn't buy it to be a sportscar so can live with the current performance.

The wife is getting 22mpg knocking around and just over 30mpg on a run which is much better than we were expecting :)

hello all iv got a td6 rangerover on a 2004 i mainly do around town driving and im getting 22.9 mpg which i was happy with its been chipped by chip express before i brought itthen i de egr it a few weeks ago now im getting 24.1 around town . i dont poodle but i dont hack it about either there not the sort of car to take bends quickly or hard on and off the throttle i just enjoy the drive

thanks mike

Yeh I'm not having a moan about it chief, I'm just asking because I thought that was kind of the point in a forum?????
I've just done an oil and filter service and it has improved, but hey I'm not a mechanic......again this is why I thought I'd ask.
Thanks for the advice!

Your consumption seems to be on the high side.

L322's are know for sticky rear brake calipers, may be worth checking you don't have one binding given your poor fuel economy.

Diesels had the GM gearbox from 2002 to mid 2006

Late 2006 and 2007 onwards models used the ZF 6 speed gearbox

See this thread: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/did-all-td6-models-use-gm-gearbox-208429.html

Hippo what type of transmission oil cooler you guys have? they ones with NAS have a different type than what you have and do not have problems with them. Oil and filter needs to be done 50-60K miles

Ash croft had a bit about the different coolers used and recommended the NAS one

This is what I thought, I'll take a look at the rear calpiers but I'm not sure where I would start. When I put £90 I have just done a 180 mile motorway journey and it used around £40-£50 worth of diesel, and ive done another 100(ish) miles around town and its now ready for a re-fill..........does this sound about right?
I'm sorry if I am coming across as a total retard here but you boys clearly know your s**t!

Datatek has got the point right !!
Your consumption is in with the v8 petrol league

I was towing a bike yesterday on the a roads I was getting 18.2 gallon.

I would have thought you should be in the mid 20s for around town and motorway would be above 30s.

my TD6 has never got anywhere near 30MPG !!!

i didn't think it was possible

mine is chipped on the highest setting though.

does 19 around town, averages 23 on the motorway. but I don't usually do any long distance driving so the MPG rarely goes higher than 19MPG around town

£40 miles on mine gives me around 120 miles - thats running around town, only short journeys

You're only supposed to use one foot on the accelerator :p I get 30 /31 ish on a motorway run.

In my dreams. As I said before, I lost 2mpg when I changed the fuel pump but even then I was only getting 22mpg around town and I drive like my feet belong to a fairy! (yeah ok bix and Hippo come get the comments in :p )
