I use chequer plate to strengthen up panels (wing tops) but I'm not a big fan. The problem as I see it is yes you can tidy up areas but then you have no idea what is going on underneath........esp with a disco that have a distressing tendancy to rot from the inside out

At the vey least you'll need to thoroughly treat corrosion before covering it up, seal the plate so it doesn't trap water behind and use fixings made from the same material as the panel

I've just finished my new chequer plate floor today....

Have you thought about just renewing the whole wing?
It's not too bad a job - the hardest part is finding decent replacement parts unless you fancy handing over circa £1k for new panels!

It's also a prime opportunity to assess the quality of your inner wings and repair as necessary.
