Afternoon one and all!

In search of my latest weird noise I have removed the cambelt, tensioner and idler.
However, my flywheel locking tool jumped while undoing the crankshaft pulley and now I need to relocate the correct hole in the flywheel.
Should the pin/drill bit go right through the flywheel or just sit in it?

The timing pin definitely goes into the hole in the flywheel/ flex plate.
The position needs to be spot on, or it won't go in.
Having the locking too break isn't ideal either. The bolt does become very stuck though, even my buzz gun struggled with mine.

I've got a drill bit in the hole now. The new timing tool is due tomorrow.
Sadly, having checked the idler and tensioner, I'm no closer to discovering the source of my weird noise 🤦‍♂️
 
Did you check the alternator overrun pulley? They are known to fail, which can make odd noises as the drive
belt oscillates.
 
That's sounding very unpleasant. Is it performing as it should? It's a bit like a big end is on the way out.

It still drives fine 🤷‍♂️
Can you do a video from under the bonnet? It's a very strange noise. It's definitely not a normal TD4 noise, almost race engine in sound, which makes me think there's something touching something.

I can't hear it from under the bonnet. I'm waiting a replacement flywheel locking tool. When I put it back together, I'll do another video 👍

Ah, then it's potential something on the engine touching the body. Have a good look between the engine and body.
I had a strange vibration at certain RPMs, which I found was the fuel line that had come adrift from its clip by the PS pipes, allowing it to buzz against the floor.

It does sound like unintentional contact between something mechanical and the body.
 
If it's the old belt, then it doesn't want to be tightened to a new belt setting, as it won't stretch twice without breaking. That's tighter than the new belt setting, so I'd back it off a bit. Hold the tensioner top section with an adjustable spanner. ;)
