Servicing my 300tdi defender tomorrow; can anyone tell me if I can replace the aux drive belt with the viscous fan & its cowl in place?

Taking the fan off makes changing the belt much easier, 32mm AF, left hand thread. Then put a spanner on the tensioner (can't remember the size) wind up the remaining movement in the spring and the belt will slide off easy.

Thanks chaps - I'll give it ago with the fan & cowl in place - when this approach doesn't work I'll do it properly & take the cowl & fan off.

You don't need to remove the fan cowal just the fan......... then take the pressure off the belt tensioner - simples
