Just a quick heads-up on a problem recently mentioned on the BBC news; the theft of catalytic converters.

Apparently there are some toe-rags who try to make a living out of crawling underneath vehicle and cutting out the cats.

From what was said in the news snippet it can be quite lucrative, cats contain some semi-precious metals such as platinum and paladium.

Vehicles with a higher chassis (4x4 and commercials) appear to be most at risk.

easier to crawl under with a sawzall to get them

They'll be out of luck if they crawled under mine, got rid of the catalytic converter long time ago, they might get a shotgun up there arse though

They been doing that down south for ages.

Had a busy spell of it about 2 years back when they went into a multistory carpark in southampton and nicked loads, i also had one of mine taking of one of my vans outside a drivers house at early hours of the morning! cost me £350 the little scrot bags

Is that what you call hacksaws Thor or is it something completely different.

no, not at all. Battery powered or electric powered. made by many different manufacturers

FREE SHIPPING — DEWALT Cordless Reciprocating Saw — Tool Only, 18V, Model# DC385B | Reciprocating Saws| Northern Tool + Equipment

Like vise grips is the generic term for locking pliers. or crescent wrench for a adjustable wrench. Milwaukee made the first one and marketed/called a swazall as it will sawzall with the right blade

Vise grips here are called molegrips and an adjustable wrench is a monkey spanner. :)

I get our local West Mercia Police updates by email. Every week there are catalytic converters pinched from cars on drives.

The barstewards have certainly got some balls!

I once had the A frame nicked off my trailer and they used that to nick a Hobby caravan that had had the A frame removed by the owner so no-one could nick it.
That cost me £350 the arseholes.

catalytic converters been gettin nicked for ages! I used to get tugged quite regularly at night when I had my transit and when going through an industrial estate they asked to search the van for catalytic converters - first i'd heard of it and thought the copper had lost his marbles! When they realised I was infact on my way home from work they explained the issues they'd been having :D

There was a van hire company your way that had all the catalytic converters nicked from their fleet of Sprinter vans about a year ago, the woman that owned the company said it cost £1000 to replace each one, the pikeys were selling them for £100 each. She said in a tv interview that she would rather just give the pikeys the £100! Mercedes wanted £250 per van to fit anti theft devices on the Sprinters, she said she would be replacing the fleet with another marque.

Guy next door had it done. used a chain cutter first time then a hydrallic cutter, ex fire brigade stolen while on a fire. Low lives can do anything and need to be properly dealt with. I wonder what it would be like using that jaws thing on their arms ? Noisy you bet.

Most of the ones I have replaced were cut of with a hydraulic cutter and mostly Freelanders. On the BBC the cop said they had 10,000 stolen cats reported in the last twelve months.
I have also fitted security etchings on some cats for customers. the things (cats) get more expensive each year.
