You should have kept the wax cylinder.... I remember record players in cars played 45s...
 
Iv still got cassettes and play them in the RR, the most common 2 things are a build up on the pick up head clean with a cotton bud dipped in meths or the azimeth of said pick up head has gone out of spec mine has and give slightly decreased volume.
Must adjust it sometime

I still use them on mine. Nothing like a mix tape, to make you feel 21 again ;) I use a cleaner but also use another magicky fingy , which has some type of pcb inside. It emits a signal for around 2 seconds and does whatever magicky fingies do.
