Ive got a problem with my L reg 200tdi, The hi lo gearstick flops around like .....well alot....I can get hi and hi diff lock but not Lo or Lo diff. Ive taken the center console out but im not too sure what im looking for??

If you've taken the centre cover out there should be a thick grey foam cover that you need to pull out, it's just sat in, with the edges held under the carpeting/cover. Under that is a rubber cover that's held in by ~ 12 rivets or screws which needs to either be cut (NOT reccommended) or the screws/rivets removed, under which you can see the tops of the transfer and gear boxes. If you're sat in the drivers seat looking forward, on the right hand side you'll see the linkages for the hi-lo lever, it's likelt that one of the links has broken or come out.

Main gear lever has a small plate covering it, but the transfer box is opne and crud can get in and accumulate so it's worth taking some time to clean this area out as much as you can.

It's a bugger getting the rivets out, but persevere, and don't worry too much about bending the metal surround that holds the rubber cover down, this can be hammered flat again and re-used.

Have fun. ;)

Thanks for the reply, ive taken the foam out and the rubber cover already had a big split in it so I just enlarged it a bit and can see that the shaft that goes into the transfer box is still attached but doesn't feel like it's doing anything, but the linkage is working as it should. there is 6 or so nuts that hold the top of the case where the shaft goes into the transfer box, take these out and have a look?? thanks again

Sorry, I dunno is the honest answer, I got that far and solved my issues ..... Personally I'd have a really good look at the linkages 'cos on mine it looked like it was working but a bar at the top wasn't moving quite as it should. Fixed it there and it worked.

I'd also, as you've suggested, undo stuff until I got to a part that was broken.

As an aside, are you sure you're changing gear properly? Not being funny, but my mate drove my Disco and said he also couldn't get from Hi to Lo ... but he wasn't moving the lever far enough!. It's sometimes also worth feathering the clutch as you do it, get it on the point of biting as you change.

undo those six bolts and the selector is revealed there should be a tab coming off the shaft which engages with the box it can brake off if it has been forced in the past

i think you will find when you take the 6 bolts out of the transfer box selector cover and look at the shaft you will find a grub screw which has come looseor dropped out, mine had dropped out
