Hi Guys

Thanks for having a look. I am going to view my first disco today. It's a 1993 LAND ROVER Discovery 200 Tdi.

What sort of common faults should I be looking for with buying my disco? and where on the vehicle should I be checking?

Thanks for your time. I look forward to becoming a disco owner soon

rust - between tyres and sunroof(s) and between front and rear bumpers. The bumpers aint imune either . Injun (no rattles or smoke after startup), gearbox - easy changing up and down. rattles, clonks, wandery steering, lights all work. lecky windows all go up and down. doors all open from inside and out.

I live near Redditch.

The vehicle is based in Melton Mowbray Leicestershire. Should be going in an hour though so I understand it's too short notice. Just after some comman faults to look out for as this will be my first LR & 4x4.

I'm just having trouble getting a half decent vehicle at the moment. I travelled 200 miles yesterday to pick up a RR Classic.
I asked the seller what rust issues there were with the car and he said 'oh, just the tailgate' Brilliant I thought.
Paid £100 for 2 single way train tickets to collect vehicle and it was a nail and a patched up nail at that. it then cost me £150 to get 2 tickets back on top of cancelling the insurance etc.

That really dented my faith in the honesty of others when he knew how far I was travelling. I don't think he was an enthusiast so maybe he didn't care but I know he was deluded. what an anus.

don't forget to check the boot floor, lift the carpet in the back (all of it) and have a good look, these can resemble swiss cheese if it's not already been replaced.

discos are the ultimate in gayness after gaylanders............i'd rather drive a slitty then a chavmobile rust bucket :D

this is from the guy who used to be Disco71?????

MrTom, also check the wheel arches, don't be afraid to have a good poke around, literally, and look at the bottoms of the posts inside the doors. have you been given any pics, or is it on ebay? so we can maybe have look from that point of view?

Thanks for the (good) advice I'll give it a detailed inspection.

Hi,

1993 LAND ROVER Discovery 200 Tdi

It's through auto trader. it's done 99K

Thanks for all your help.

Good Luck, our first disco cost us a lot more, over time, than we anticipated, but it was a great learning curve and the next disco we bought was a much better example, be prepared for unexpected costs later on, because, hey, it is a Land Rover after all :)

Cheers.

Judging by those pictures would you say it looks tidy enough to make the journey to view. I'm not reallly sure what to look for at first glance.

I'll check all that's been recommended on this thread though.

looks tidy enough, but speaking from experience, trader pics can be very deceiving, as we said before check the boot floor, wheel arches and door posts, have a look at the sills too, that checker plate could be hiding a multitude of sins

oh yeah and nearly forgot, the bounce test. Bounce each corner, if it doesn't stop after 1 or 2 bounces the suspension is on it's way out

I was a bit concerned by the plates too. If I open the door I should be able to see any rot along the sills and bottom edges of the doors (I hope). I think any pics of a truck can be deceiving after my adventure yesterday

oh well lets get to it. I'll report back later. :mil80:

Did you buy it ?
Good luck !

Parts are relatively cheap,
Rust is not cheap to fix, so check sills, inner wings anywhere underneath, back door, boot floor, and inside the rear door shuts by the latch.

Check mot and if there was an advisory notice last time, could tell you a few things.
Steering leak from steering box, check all switches etc
+ all from above,

Just bought my first landy, Disco V8, its brilliant, needs a radiatoir tho, make sure you got a few pennies left to get it serviced / replace any bits that need doing

mileage ? must be high as not in advert,
Prob been off road (cheq plate and snorkel)
Check for damage underneath !
