Hello all, Long time no visit!
I need to have the leather on my steering wheel re-stitched so was looking about for a replacement. P38 wheels seem to be really cheap on ebay so I was wondering if they used the same boss as the soft dash? As they use the same rotary coupler i was also thinking i could potentially wire up the stereo controls.

No idea but I imagine a Disco 1 and Disco 2 wheel would, as they are essentially the same dash!

Does your soft dash have the uprated stereo? As if so, any additional wiring attempts tend to be a complete ballache :)

My current softdash had a fairly standard clarion stereo with 6 disc changer and sub in the boot. It had ISO plugs on it so bunging in a sony CD/MP3 replacement just worked. My previous hard dash had a 4 channel amp in the boot, sub volume control on the dash, etc which was a royal pain!
As the p38 was started in the same model year as my toy and the wheels look similar i was hoping the shaft / splines would be a match. I have seen P38 - sony steering wheel control adapters so was assuming i could bodge the 2 vacant pins from the rotary coupler in to one of those and save reaching across the car whenever a rubbish tune comes on.

Think you were lucky - my soft dash has the Harmon Kardon stereo with Clarion headunit, each speaker and the sub is individually amp'd with no ISO connectors - so a new headunit would require rewiring the car!!

Fortunately Clarion serviced my original h/u and wired in an iPod lead too, so all is well with the world.

I think you will find the Disco I and lesser extent Disco II have more in common than the P38 - they all use the same chassis and dashboard, whereas the P38 was a completely new design of vehicle from the Classic!

My hard dash had that. it wasn't too bad, i got a head unit with 6 pre-amped outputs, made up an adapter and ran them in to the factory loom then plugged a new amp in the boot, fitted all new speekers as the origionals were ruined and it sounded pretty good. I'd still have it if an idiot hadn't run in to the back with their lorry. Now i have this green PITA which i am slowly going through fixing / replacing things.
I'll have to see if i can find anybody with a disco 300 / II / P38 to play musical wheels with. Or admit defeat and spend some money on a softdash wheel and a bluetooth stereo remote.
I have a P38 engine so that's at least one part they have (largely) in common ;)

The softdash steering wheel is identical to the Disco 1 (300 series) I believe, just without the cruise control buttons (on the dash on the Disco) but these could be transferred over I'm sure!

No idea if it’s possible. But what about the airbag? If you try it think about the airbag and be extra careful.

Diasconnect the battery, wander off for 10 minutes for a cup of tea and let the SRS system discharge, then safe to remove.

Disco 1 (300 series) and Disco II's had airbags so should be a straight swap.

Personally I'd probably get the wheel recovered, perhaps in a colour-matched leather to the seats to make it worthwhile :)
