No. There's a bolt behind it.

but i beleive i can access all the bolts on the gearbox flange. incl the small one by IRD etc.

i just wanted to try and remove g.box with out having to strip all the chassis to bits. plus didnt wasnt to disturb the o/s drive shaft if i could help it.

ill give it a bash and see how my knuckles turn out :eek:
 
it may make refitting the gearbox much more difficult having to align more things up ..............its difficult enough due to the weight and limited space

The td4 box is much bigger and heavier. Even with the subframe out its a bitch to get out and back in, I've done both, the 1.8 I left everything in and it was still easier than the td4 with subframe off and ird off

Plus, I think that the chances of successfully refitting the gearbox getting it to engage with both the clutch splines AND the IRD splines at the same time is pretty much nil.

You would be making life a hell of a lot harder for yourself for the sake of a dozen bolts an an extra half hour to get the IRD off.

The TD4 gearbox is a big, heavy bastard of a thing. I am no He-Man but can comfortably lift most FWD gearboxes into place by hand when changing clutches, but wouldnt fancy trying the TD4.
This might sound insane, but seriously - if you have a hoist, its not THAT much more work to drop the entire powertrain out. Dropping the gearbox alone requires you to disconnect a hell of a lot of stuff, and dropping out the whole motor is literally only 4 more bolts on the other engine mount, the power steering hoses (air con pump if you have it), down pipe and a couple of coolant hoses.
Once its on the floor, its easy to separate the gearbox, you can do other jobs with ease and comfort and its easy to refit the box and lift the lot back into place.

Thats exactly what I did.

You could change the thermostat whilst you got the engine out. That's a pita job to do!
 
ok ok. fair doo's ill try and remove the ird. the extra time to remove it will no doubt "speed the job up" anyhow.:cool:

does the td4 exhaust downpipe get in the way... can i leave that on?
