Morning All! Yeh, it was a big shake, but only minor damage and no casualties. Quakes always come unannounced and I was cleaning windows at the time! Luckily I'd just got down from balancing 1 foot on a chair and the other on a window ledge - or else I'd have probably ended up in a mess in the Fuschia bed!
Its funny how each quake does different damage. The 'first' quake we had in 2010 was quite a way to the west of the city but was the biggest at 7.1, it took down a lot of brick buildings and chimneys, but didn't cause wide spread damage or kill anyone. The main one on Feb 22 2011 was a 6.3 centered right by the city and totalled it with 183 casualties. This one was a 5.7 centered on the eastern edge of the city and didn't cause damage to buildings (I suppose anything that was going to fall already has) or have casualties, but created some really big slips in the Port Hills around the city. This pic was taken by a fella on a fishing group I'm in as 5M of cliffs fell into the sea at Sumner...
So it was just a reminder really of where we live and that the main fault line (about 150kms away over on the west coast here in the South Island) is overdue to 'go', and when it does - it will be the 'big one'!
