I have a dilemma, it looks as if that gear box in my 2001 td4 auto needs to be replaced (well that's what ashcrofts told me over the phone)

So, unless I can find a used gearbox, it looks like it going to the big green lane in the sky.

So question time.

1. used gear box : is it worth bothering, or should I go buy a gallon of petrol and a box of matches?

2. looking for a cheep replacement, have found a 2000 freelander, diesel, manual, 88k miles on for 1500 quid. (cheaper than a new gearbox) Is the old diesel engine any good? or should I hold out for another TD4?

Cheers guys

:(

if you can find a replacement box cheap enough that has to be the route to go down but all depends on funds

as for the L series Diesel i have one and used to have a TD4 a few years ago from what i can say from owning both

TD4 was nippier but had more to go wrong
L series bit slower less power but more reliable and good for engine mods to perk it up abit

im alot happier owning the earlier diesel than the TD4

can you not have ashcroft refurb your existing box ?

I called Ashcroft earlier, they think that the speed sensors have failed (means noting to me). They offer a refurbed box for like £900 and then £500 on top, refundable when they get my box back. The I have to pay some one to do the swap.

By the time I have coughted that lot up I can got out an get a use freebie with less miles and with a tidier interior.

Going to try motor hog tomorrow for a price on a box and a guy up the road to see if he will change it. The indepent guy near here has said that he know nothing about the auto boxes so wont touch it. DCV has no mechanic at the mo, so they can't do it....that's where I usually go.

I have spotted a nice 2001 V6 auto with 60k on, in mint condition. More fuel cost but I don't go far. Is the V6 any good?

v6 drinks a lot so fool consumption even against your td4 auto would be about double.

Ashcroft also offer a fitting service too.

If it were my v6 I wouldn't change the auto again as it's not worth it with regards to running costs + cost of replacement auto. But on a td4 auto it would be different. Depends on the mileage, how well it runs (not including broke'd auto), how well it's been maintained during it's life and if you feel you have many more trouble free motoring miles ahead. You could pick up another which needs a few hundred to do some minor repairs. An unknown second hand auto could have a fault, which you only find out about after fitting it. Ahscroft test their recon auto's so that's gives some peace of mind. If I were to change my auto again I would get Ashcroft to do it.

Wait till the weekend as petrols dropping. ;)

Would it be worth trying beemer breakers? The gearbox int unique to Hippo's :).
there's mazda and jag too but you'll need the correct gear ratio. Not sure what the others are or if suitable. I don't think they will be.

My td4 has 226,000 miles on the clock. To use the Ashcroft fitting server, I will have to have the car recovered to there. Which would be more money. Unless I can find a good used box, I don't think even an Ashcroft is financially viable, as it would be near to the £1500 mark. I can get a better condition used freelander for about the same price, with less miles on.

As for the V6, the mpg is listed at 22 mpg as opposed to the 33 ish that the td4 gives me. so around a third difference.

The car don't go very far these days, and the one that I have seen looks good........

Apart from the fuel consuption, are there any other issues with the V6?

Maybe I just need to forget it and buy a Focus :(

I love the V6!! There is hot hatch performance but Freelander practicality ;)
I ignore all the rubbish about them being as unreliable as the 1.8K as it's miles better!! (Rover's most reliable engine) The KV6 does need proper servicing by someone who knows what they are doing and they are thirsty, mine averages 20 mpg :(
The L series is a good engine but they always come in basic trim :(

Crap, didn't realise that the V6 had the same issue as the 1.8. Sod that!

It doesn't!! Bad maintenance and not checking the engine coolant every week causes the head gaskets to fail ;)
This is no diffent to any modern wet liner engine!!

YAY!!!!

Been to S+D transmission at Doncaster and spoke to the guys there. They confirmed that it sounds like a speed sensor that's failed.

There are 3 on the Jatco, one on the gear box end (£300 to fix) and two internal ones (£500) to fix.

He suggested that I drop it down so that he can check which one has failed. It does not need a complete new box (yeah, cheers Ashcrofts!)

There might be life in the old girl yet! 300,000 miles, here we come!
