Good evening all and thank you for having me. I'm really interested in a P38, love the styling. I've found one which will hopefully only fetch a rock bottom price but it has no keys? Am I a mad man for even considering it? Would it be more trouble than it's worth? I've done quite a bit of digging and seen about disengaging the transfer case to put it into neutral and tweaking the steering column to unlock it to move it till I get the key cut by main dealer? Any hints and tips much appreciated.

Has the seller the right to sell ?

It's a DVLA tax auction hence the no keys, but it does still make me raise an eyebrow but the price is almost just too good ignore but what looks to be a very tidy (at a surface level) Range Rover.

Ah, then you'll pay an indemnity on top of the price too .

Its a landrover with no keys walk away...no wait run.....

Welcome to lz

It's a third party that auctions it and you only pay their percentage premium on top.

But your replies are not filling me with confidence

If it's cheap enough and you have the time/skill/money to fix the unknown..
Just trying to say, go in with eyes fully open.
Keys are available from main dealers of you can prove ownership, just about anything is fixable with enough resource but the chances are, some things will need fixing even if it was looked after

If you can find the old owner and you are a brave man go and get the keys from him, you might have to offer him a bit of cash but would be the cheapest way, could also ask him if he knows if anything wrong with car

I think GDPR makes that task much harder nowadays and due to it having been lifted I'd figure that auction company would have gotten another V5.

would be a good start and having some history might help. It all depends on the price but if you look at scrap value if you do not pay much over that then if all goes wrong will not lose too much

The MOT will give some idea, also will say where it may have come from, near the coast and it's a walk fast away jobbie ....

Been in Devon it's almost guaranteed to be near the sea sadly. But it is still MOT'd for a month or two and I've definitely seen worse MOT histories.

You're right, you can only get the test location if you have the V5.
I think if you can get it at the right money and it’s legitimate, it may be a risk worth taking. After all we may be all in tier “5” soon, and you may need something to do.
Good luck with your search, and welcome to the Landyzone.
I hope you get a Landy and stick around, as you can string a sentence together.
:D
