I am considering buying a Faultmate to help me with my P38.

I plan on keeping the P38 for a while but cant be paying dealer prices...

Advice on what to get and price to pay would be appreciated.

I am very much an enthisiastic amateur. Will I be able to use one of these instruments. I am IT literate.

Are there better alternatives to the Faultmate.

Depends if you are looking for other diagnostics other than EAS faults. The Faultmate will do all the modules on your motor BUT it will be specific to your car only, you won,t be able to use it on another. Obviously if you come to sell the car it's a good selling point, it's easy enough to use and self explaanatory-there is also a help forum on the Blackbox site which is open to users. I believe that Wills has one, maybe he will give you a few words of advice. I have the earlier Rovacomlite which runs on any P38 providing I have the software.
 
rovacom is a good bit of kit,if your finances allow you,im going for the faultmate,i was just going to get the basic one,but i changed my mind,and im saving up for the full monty version,granted it will locked to my car,but like IR said it will be a good selling point,but i love it that much,i,ll be keeping it for a long while,unless a new sport lands in my lap for free;)

I want to be able to diagnose all modules as I love the P38 so intend on keeping it in top form. Also, if I just go for EAS faults I know all my faults will be elsewhere!!

IR would you recommend the Rovacom - how much do they cost with the full P38 software? I like the flexibility of being able to use it on other vehicles.

Andy, how much is the full monte version and where will you buty it from? Is it possible to get additional software for other vehicles or is the hardware also locked to one vehicle.

blackbox solutions is the manufacture of both,they have some refurbished rovacom but your looking at about £1500 up,theres 2 versions of faultmate read and clear faults only,and one that does the full capability the first one is about £380 the other is £540,or you could go to omitec and buy a full landrover diagnostic system for about £9000

i prefer the £540 version at the moment,even though id like a rovacom
 
The Faultmate is the latest version of the Rovacom/Rovacomlite and comes in two versions, Single Vehicle and Multi Vehicle. Obviously the Single vehicle is cheaper. You buy the software packages as you need them. Do a search on Blackbox solutions-all the info and prices are on their website. It will work on Rangies, Disco's, Freelanders. If you wanted to cover all options then you are looking at way over a grand. The hardware is common to all.

I wont be asking you for the Omitec contact details, cheeper to dump the car and buy another, a few times at that!!

I think the favourite therefore has to be the faultmate with full capability.

Really would have liked more flexibility to share the cost with a friend with the same spec vehicle.

Steve, I know its not much of a saving but you can save a little bit between you, if you wish. The Faultmate hardware unit, I believe can have a maxinum of three Single Vehicle Licences stored in its memory, buy one faultmate and two S.V.L's, so you can save the cost of a hardware unit.

Persoanally I buy two complete set ups, because there will be a time when you both wish to have/use the Faultmate with you at once, and you'll only be saving between 75.00 to 125.00 quid depending on which faultmate hardware unit you buy.
 
Blackbox are selling a refurb. Rovacom, fully loaded with LR software for £1500+VAT. If there are a couple of you looking to chip in, you could have a nice little earner.
And it's multiple (No limit) vehicle application.:behindsofa:
 
Hi i have the faultmate msv, it is locked to my car but i can add another 2 vehicles onto the removeable module (at an additional price per car ) but then another module can be purchased to add up to another 3 vehicles and so on. So as long as you keep having rovers or land rovers the main unit can be used just purchase a new licence. I must add though i have had mine since july 08 and its already paid for itself, its a great bit of kit and i would highly recommend it.

Irish, what vehicles are covered by the Rovacom, is it all Range Rovers/land Rovers up to a certain age? Is it something that can be sold on if ever I get fed up of Range Rovers?

Hi Steve.
Disco. 1 & 2,Classic, P38, Freelanders to 2001, Defenders to 2007. Covers all software modules for these models, petrol & diesel. Have a look in the Bargain Basement on here https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/ I would think you could also add modules for later cars if you wish to buy them. You could always drop them a mail if you need more info.
Personally, I don't think you would lose out on it if you decided to sell it, plus, you can get some money back toward the cost by doing jobs yourself & for others.
 
Send Paula a mail at Blackbox and ask whatever questions you want-they are very helpful. Or, if you want, you could always ring-they are in Cyprus and are all ex. pats.

I'm trying to decide whether to part with the cash for a Faultmate too.....have taken the first plunge by buying a Panasonic Toughbook laptop via ebay to use for the software as a dedicated laptop for it. If you change vehicle - ie are ever so stupid as to sell one P38 and acquire another one:D or a Disco etc, am I right in thinking that you can pay a further fee to use the hardware on the new car? Depends on the cost of yet another licence, I guess, as to whether its worth it. I'm pretty well stuck with my old P38 for the forseeable future unless I win the lottery, so it prob makes sense to buy a Faultmate. :eek:
 
Best bet is to have a look on their website and the options are laid out. What you can do is buy an extra hardware module from what I can see, to use with an extra dedicated vehicle.
 
has anyone seen the new diagnostic tool from bearmach,called the hawkeye,it,s on there site in the downloads section,right at the bottom,it,s going to be released for general sale on march 1st.

i don,t think it will be all singing and dancing like rovacom or faultmate,probably read and clear faults only,but it would be nice to see what it can do
 
The thing is Andy, do people want to just read and clear faults or change parameters etc. I am now looking at buying the BECM Direct Memory module which will give me the capability of getting into the guts of the ECU to unlock it and reprogram more options. Don't really want to step on anyones toes across the water but I think there is potential for the facility over here as all the dealers want to do is sell new units at around 800 a pop. I also have the mosfets to repair faulty units and I may as well put them to use and earn a few bob in the process to pay for it and also supplement me pension.:mooning:
