I need to change a lot of the suspension bushes so i need a press would a 6 ton be up to the job ? I would go for bigger but with lack of money on a very tight budget.
 
Tbh 6 ton will be a bit light, I would say double that at least, not forgetting the cheap tools like to advertise big numbers.
 
I changed some bushes and even with a 20ton press I still needed heat and duck oil to get them out.
Also don’t forget that’s a LOT of pressure and if you use sockets as spacers etc they can shatter or ping out with astounding force.

Hi, you can drill through the rubber all round then the metal centre comes out just leaving the outer metal part of the bush which you carefully hacksaw through until it will collapse in. Takes a while but if you have a drill & hacksaw...... pictures of my Freelander 1's suspension bushes.

Something similar: Drill through the rubber then let the bit separate the centre from the outer cover. Screwdriver to bend then split the cover.

It depends on the vehicle, but quite often its not much more expensive to simply buy the whole suspension link with a bush already fitted, which is a lot less hassle than messing about pressing bushes out and in.

I agree, after removal, cleaning, rubbing down then prime & paint it was a lot of hours & effort. The only consolation was you did it yourself :rolleyes:.

Sod the hard work. Place in Stoke I know will blast and powercoat each one for about £15. Will last longer than the whole car...
 
Ok thanks everyone lots of good information there didn't even consider sockets exploding in the press
Going for a 12 ton press should be more than adequate to press in new bushes once cleaned up also going to stick the Bush in freezer overnight.
Got one side out absolute pig front rubber Bush had split and compressed till it was flush with the side of all three fixing bolts had to cut and beat the sockets on even then had to use a crow bar and club hammer to get it out also made my 75m extension into a aniseed twist joy I have the other side to do yet oh well onward :DIMG_20201117_144349.jpg IMG_20201117_144411.jpg IMG_20201117_152657.jpg

That's cheap, down this neck of the woods when I wanted the spare wheel carrier done they wanted £80 ! (Could of got a new one for that)A mate who who used to paint Chinnocks in the RAF did it for nowt with some sort of aircraft paint & what ever it is, its as tough as old boots.
