I want to be able to self recover my 'new' defender 110 300tdi (with came with a winch bumper but no winch) and am considering what to buy.

It seems to me that in many situations it's better to come back out of what you drove into - in which case a front-mounted winch is n't much use. On that basis, a tirfor is a more useful thing to have. And I can't see an electric winch is going to be too reliable if you go wading accidentally!

Am I missing something? If it's an either or choice, is tirfor the way to go?

if there's an existing thread on this please refer me!

Really, honestly, you need both.

A front winch is the natural placement for the vehicle primary electric winch, and you need a method of recovering yourself backwards also, even a hi lift jack which is another value do tool can be used as a winching device, so maybe front winch plus hi lift is the answer.

Report back with your budget :)

electric winches are so much easier...BUT what happens if it stops workig mid recovery and your on your own, you still need some form of manual rescue if poss.

I got a tirfor 5t pull 3t lift job its huge and weights a tonne 25 mts 19mm cable when you think most winches run 9 - 11mm cable its overkill

used it twice takes up a load of room and weight and is hard graft to use but it does work and its been a godsend 3 times in last 5 years

you can get smaller ones made my tmax on ebay which i keep looking at to save weight and room thing is my ex mod tirfor was under a 100 tmax are over 200 quid

i run a front electric as well

if i had my time and money again would prob just try a tmax hand one out

if anyone ever has a snatch / pulley block for 19mm cable for sale let me know :D
