Hello fellow mudders,

Don't you just love surprises? I used to until today. To my absolute astonishment the bulkhead panel on the drivers side of my 9o decided it had had enough of being complete and promptly holed itself. It turns out that because of the crap steel used on this panel it was rusting underneath. I didn't notice because it hadn't bubbled. I now have a hole about 1 1/2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide in this panel. I am however, competely aghast as to what to do.

Is this panel replaceable, is it just a case of painting it with rust inhibitor and filling the hole or is it a new bulkhead jobby (chuffing hope not)? I have peered into the hole with a torch and its not rusted to the bulkhead itself. If this is replaceable (new to landies) does it need cutting away from the upper part of the bulkead where the windscreen sits or is it just painted over? Is it welded on or bolted and what panels need to be removed to get to it?

I have an advanced diploma in muppetry so please dont be too technical, if you can help theres a few pints in it for you. If you can come down to Hampshire and help me in person, There will be more pints than you can shake a muddy stick at. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Jim there is a guy selling the repair panels on ebay less than 20 quid a panel think time wise about 4hrs work

Evening Gents,

Ever the complete technophobe I've completely naffed my camera. I have tried to upload a drawing I've done which won't seem to upload either. Did I mention my diploma in muppetry? The part in question is the section between the door and front wing (drivers side) to which the door is bolted at the bottom. I've been told this is just a panel and only connects to the bulkhead. I can email a drawing if I crank my brain into gear. Cheers, Jim. :eek:
 
I'm sure you can get replacements I've seen pictures of them but just tried Paddocks etc and can't find them
 
I've had a look as well and can't see them. "It doesn't mean there not there!" as her indoors has just screamed across the room, apparently it just means I am not looking hard enough! I think Shanno 2k has the right answer and ebay is the way forward. I saw one recently and should have bought it then. Thanks for the help gents.
 
It'd be far easier and cheaper to have a piece welded in than to replace the bulkhead.
 
My sentiments entirely. I've got the dreaded MOT coming up which is delightful and need to get it fixed before then. I've got an ARC welder and as the steel is so **** in this area I think it will probably just blast more holes in it. I thought as a temporary measure to stop any water getting to the bulkhead proper and to get it through the MOT I would rip the rust out, paint the area with anti-rust paint and pack the area with chemical metal filler. I don't relish all that sanding and flatting though. :eek:
 
Wish it had bloody well done it in the summer and I wouldn't have this trouble! I have a workshop so I reckon it should be OK. By the grace of god, a lot of cheap plonk and some recreational pharmeceuticals it might turn out ok. ;) Wish me luck!
 
I'm sure I've seen 'em for less than a tenner from Haddocks or beamends or somewhere.
 
Paddocks part nos . RHS. LR62R LHS. LR62L. 10 quid plus vat each . Drill a few holes in them to mate against good metal on bulkhead. Leave doorscrew retaining plates in position. Hold repair plate in position partially tighten hinge . any trimming should be done at this stage. Now clamp plate tightly to bulkhead. Weld holes Remove clamp grind access weld off. Then use fillers where needed . Undercoat paint and finish off by tightening up hinge.----BB

A great help. I will get on with it when the weathers a bit better. Is the door pillar easy enough to replace? It is showing a little bubbling and would like to replace it before it goes through. I've got the bit from rimmer bros and believe its a case of removing the door and front wing, chopping the old one out and replacing with new. What I cant get though is how do you replace the bracket?

O K Ormus Your right Just as well we didnt paint forgot to say drill 2 holes for windscreen holder after the welding stage.using original holes as as guide..----BB

is that less than a tenner a pair?? cos this e bay bloke is doing a pair fer under 18squid.
 
hi all,

I am in the process of fitting upper bulkhead repair sections to both sides on my 90. The cost me about £20 each and I picked them up from Kieth Gott Land Rovers as there my local supplier for parts.

I am however of the mentality that covering up the problem doesn't fix it. so I have cut out all the corrosion and the new panels will be welded in this week. The repair sections I got go from the top hinge right around to the first vent flap bracket. I dont think this is going to be a easy job to get right. Still as its just a bulkhead with no windscreen or doors fitted it should be easier.
