Hi,im new to this forum and just noticed the 'expedition slot',ive a house in bulgaria(veliko turnovo)and usually fly out, renting a car once there....but ive a 90,a map....and (you can see whats coming here lol)im thinking maybe i should make the drive part of the holiday this year instead of just doing the usuall'france' and take a drive to BG.
Ive no doubt this has been done manytimes by members on this forum....so(credit crunch permitting)i may well follow your footsteps later this year......any tips/advice/route????
ive driven in europe thousands of times....and driven to most parts of BG once there so the day to day things dont bother me,but the bit ive never done is the UK to BG bit and there are so many different routes to take.....thats the bit id like advice on....which way to go/what countries to avoid?

Hi, I drive from the UK to Serbia (next door) quite regular. Probably about 150 times
I can get from Calais to Novi Sad in Serbia in about 17-18 hours if I'm in a normal car.
I've driven it in everything from a Suzuki SJ410 (Yeah, 50 all the way) And at the end of last year I drove a Disco pulling a caravan.
Quickest route?... Calais or Dunkirk...Brussels...Aachen...Koln...Frankfurt...Wurzburg.
..Regensburg...Passau...Linz...Vienna...Budapest...From there it's up to you whether you go thru Serbia or Romania..
The Serbs will hit you up for insurance at about 100 Euros (unless you fab up your own green card)
The road through Serbia is as safe as houses. but make sure you are awake when driving. it's one of them two way roads where everyone thinks it's got a centre overtaking lane...
I would plan on day one... drive from calais to Regensburg. Day two...Regensburg to Belgrade or Bucharest. then Bulgaria.
Any questions, yell.

we need denmark......its a little bit of expendable waste ground that saves europe from coastal errosion! And here in the uk we send all our undesirable residents there with a view to allowing them back when they can behave themselves......sadly in storms case he will be there for a long time!

im now in a moment of madness considering taking the bike instead of the landi for this trip......if we get a nice summer...i know its a landi forum but what the hell....im starting to formulate a plan for taking the bike over lol

Just come back from VT area. Had a previous trip down to Harmanli / Haskovo area last year. Tried Hungary / Romania route this year and that was terrible for us:mad:. Will use Croatia / Serbia route for the next few years (at least) due to the constant road-works through Romania.

I'd suggest Germany to Austria at Salzburg (route 8 from Munich). Then Austria to Slovenia at Villach (A10) then Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade then head south and then east into Sofia.

The border crossings into and out of Serbia take time so try and avoid rush-hours + fri p.m. / sun evenings. Ours took about an hour queueing on each one.

If you'd like more info then I can pass it on.
