Hi all, rear silencer parted company with the centre silence today, which is easily repairable but question is, if I do away with the centre box & replace it with a stainless steel section, then refit the rear box (after repairing the flange) will it be noisy at motorway speeds ? The centre & rear boxes are genuine & in great condition apart from the bits where they bolt together (10p eng. EU2 so no cat from new).

I've got rid of the middle silencer long time ago for tuning and i can't say it's noisy on motorway but i have a wrap on it

but question is, if I do away with the centre box & replace it with a stainless steel section, then refit the rear box (after repairing the flange) will it be noisy at motorway speeds ?
The answer is YES.

But I think your question should probably be, "will it be too noisy" rather than will it be nosy. Sadly the answer to this will be highly subjective. And only you can truly answer it for yourself.

Something else to consider, the volume in the drivers seat might be notably less than the rear seats. Don't know if you carry people in the back, but chances are while you might be fine up front, they may struggle to hear what the front seat passengers are saying when they are sat in the back.

I did this on mine, to improve performance, it didn't in fact it made no difference at all, including noise.
So in your shoes I'd go the whole hog and fit a proper, stainless, sports exhaust, full system, as I did with my D1. It made a biggish difference to the performance with if anything a slight improvement to economy and the noise was OK, barely audible, except in tunnels.

Hi all, thanks for all the replies. As I couldn't stretch to a full big bore system I had to affect a repair to the rear box flange & replace the centre section with s/steel straight through item.
I made a flange out of some scrap, took me ages drill, files & hacksaw , then got my nephew to weld it on (see pics).
Refitted today & it sounds barely any different even at 70mph I couldn't detect any extra noise , so thanks again, all the best.
