hiya

whilst ive been working on my hippo noticed a small breather pipe on top of my autobox and was wondering about the ird and axles etc

in the sense of would it be worth to fit breather pipes to the autobox, ird and diffs etc, it would be easy enough to do and was just wondering if anyone has done it to prevent any possibilities regarding water ingress etc

im not going to do any deep wading etc but just as a precautionary measure and looks a simple job by buying a roll and extensing them all up high into the engine bay

sorry as always asking daft questions but just didnt know if anyone has done this to there freelander

Morning gary I've moved my turbo vent filter from down the back of the engine and raised it up into the corner of the bulkhead reason being we get quite bad floods around where I work. A couple of years ago went through some deep water trying to get home I must say at this point I'm lucky I havnt drowned the poor thing!!! It lost power part way home I found it to be the said filter had got wet. Changed it and back to full power hence the move so yeah its not a bad idea to extend breathers just in case!! But I do get silly ideas when it floods or snows.I must say Its been a bloody good tool !!!!
 
+1 on moving the turbo vent filter higher.

I also fitted an extension rubber pipe to the IRD breather pipe.

The rear diff can fend for itself. ;)

And i don't think the auto box has a breather - or has it? :confused:
 
I not to keen where the boost solonoid is either I've sealed up as much as I can. If I go though deep stuff the brakes go bad as if the servo isn't working?

the other u shaped pipe at the back of the engine, what is that one for please , is that the ird breather pipe ,

plus the autobox breather pipe i imagine that has to be high temperature hosing etc

Under the car on the rear passenger side corner is a large blank grommet, there's also one on the drivers side but thats where the towbar electrics run.
Put two holes in the grommet and push some washer jet pipe up through it and back out again about 2", secure the top of the loop up behind the fog/reversing light.
Connect t'other end to the diff breather.

John extend the trans breather at the back of the engine when you do the turbo one as they are in the same area and won't take much time to do it. Its quite supprising how much water the good old hippo goes through I work in aston cantlow and anybody who has been around the area will know what I mean!!

Hello guys, I have the same questions as gstuart. I was wondering for awhile now if this little orifice on the autobox is a vent/breather and should it be raised a little as it could get some dirt stuff in it. What do you say ?
 
If you mean the little bent pipe which pokes out the top of the auto box, that is indeed the breather.
I suppose you could extend it to help stop dirt/water ingress but I'm not sure if anyone ever has.
I think if your hippo is ever that deep in water, you'll probably have a few more things to think about though!
 
I wonder why did they leave it like this. It almost looks like it is designed to be attached to a hose. Anyway, thanks for the info.
