Hi to all broke down yesterday got towed to garage. Freelander td4 52 reg
A flapping sound was coming from engine then thud sound then engine cut out now will not turn over, the crank moves slightly but not turning, no engine lights on dash so any thoughts of what it might be.
Regards Chas :(

I don't know much about the doozles but does the crank turn easily when the glow plugs are out? Sounds like it's fecked though :(.

Flapping then thudding and now not turning? I would remove the ancillary drive belts and try it again with jump leads. If no improvement then I would assume that there is an internal engine fault.

Cam chain on TD4 ;)

TWO Aux belts to check & due at 10 years or 96,000 miles , Yours is 10 years and 149,000 so if it's the original then that would be it ?
Have you looked to see if the belt is wrapped/jammed around pullys ?

Mine @ 12 years & 70,000 miles were very cracked and ready to break

Could be a whole list of thing's with that engine, but with you mentioning a flappining sound then it cutting out could well be swirl flaps falling off. My advice under no circumstances crank it over any more. remove the inlet manifold and have a peek to see whats going on.....

and it's a chain on the td4 so no worries of chain snapping, although chain guides can deteriate and fall to bit's worst case scenario your chain may slip a tooth or 2 or 3.... Like I said don't be tempted to crank it any more........

TD4 does not have the flaps in the intakes, only on BMWs.

When you say the crank moves a bit "OP",how easily.
Could it be a snapped Crank?

If its covered by a warranty why worry, let them find the problem at their expense, and then let us know what it was,

Thought the TD4 was a bm engine with the dreaded swil flapp's..... Please correct me if i'm wrong.
LR fitted the early version of the M47 BMW engine, no swirl flaps, and no need to use fully sythenthetic oil as it has no DP filter.

well from what you describe , it sounds just what happened to mine,

snapped crank shaft,,,,, yes i know wouldnt belive it too,

drop the sump off and inspect the crank, hope its not this but apparently its a weakness with this engine ,,

good luck
