Disco Shoes

Hi
Just bought myself a 1996 Discovery Tdi ES that needs a bit of tidying up.
I bought new discs and pads all around. When I removed the n/s front I noticed the inside pad had worn down completely to the metal but the outer pad still had plenty of life in it. Anyway I changed the disc and pads and found the wheel quite tight to turn as the pads were quite tight on the disc, I did fully push the pistons in. I thought that after a few miles then they'd wear a little and the wheel would turn freely as normal. So I drove around 5 miles home and the brakes stank.
Do you think I should change the caliper as the inner pistons were quite hard to push in compared to the others? Although they were hard to push in they did actually push all the way in so I'm stumped as to whether the caliper is faulty or not?
The discs and pads are definately the correct parts and have been fitted correctly.
By the way the springs that go on the pad retaining pins were in pieces so haven't been replaced as yet. They looked really weak so do they actually do anything?
Cheers.
