Hello All,

I've bought a tool a while back when in need to change the discs and pads, said to be universal. As a matter of fact it isn't. Tried it last week and it's too small. Amazon product
I was wondering if I put some wholesaw cut pieces of osb boards on top would it be ok to for rewinding it or
is the pressure needed to high. Anyones knows the diameter of the caliper?

Forgot to measure when I had it off. Resp. would that one work as there is no DM, don't know : FreeTec Brake Caliper Piston Wind Back Tool Compatible with Audi VW Golf Polo T4 T5 Brake Repair: Amazon.co.uk: Automotive

The one in your link should work......trying to visualise how your universal on is too small ?

Metal would be better than wood....but wood would probably work

Hi,

You can use a screw driver and an old inner brake pad to gently push to brake piston.
If you need a tool and it's very hard too push, you need certainly a new brake caliper.

If when driving, the brake caliper stay pushed just after braking, you will certainly smell your brakes start burning through the air conditioning.
If it happen to you stop your car before your braking system start burning.
If you don't stop you will soon see flames.

If the piston takes lot's of pushing to retract it, then it's too tight and the caliper needs replacing.
If the caliper is in good condition, you should be able to push the pistons back in with little more than hand pressure.

Isn't it that you push it till it stops, then wind the keyed part and repeat until done ?
 
The universal brake piston tool I bought to do my daughters brakes actualy turns the piston as it.pushes it in. Effectevley it screws itback into the caliper. Are there grooves in the freelander calipr pistons

The piston just needs to be pressed back into the caliper body. There's no keyed part, it's just a conventional round piston.

Rear calipers that contain the parking brake mechanism need to be rotated at the sime time as being pushed back in, but that's so the parking brake actuator assembly is reset.
On the FL1 front calipers, they simply need to be pressed back in, which shouldn't be difficult.
 
+1 on g-clamp for front calipers.

I use Sealey VS0282 set on most cars that require wind-back (usually on the rears only).

That tool isn't universal. Just saw the instructions and there are only some car manufacturers listed, but not LR. The metal plate as on the picture is too small and slides into the piston(?) hole. Will try with the wood on top. I think that might work as the diameter should hopefully be big enough.

Tried to upload a picture, but it says I wouldn't have permission to do so.

Thank you Alteredtech, that's a good plan B with the screwdriver.

No the piston looked fine, just the tool isn't what they said on Amazon. I watched it on here and the rewind looks much larger than the one I have which is just 4.5cm DM.
