Having just rebuilt the front axle of my defender and changed the disks and pads and refurbished a spare set of calipers, I have a rattle which is driving me up the wall. The pads are very loose in the calipers and can be easily rattled by hand. Unfortunately they also rattle at low speed, there is also a rhythmical knocking from the front, which disappears when the brake pedal is touched. I have checked the props for faults and tightened the bolts, but this has made no difference. I did fit new pins and anti rattle coil springs when it was put back together. The Haynes said these were fitted to a 2002 onwards Defender

The car is a 1995 300tdi Defender, should there be disk pad shims that clip on to the pads or should the pads be fitted with the sprung steel anti.rattle shims for that year.

Failing all of that I will need to refurb my original calipers and get new seals and pistons.

Could be warped disc, more likely a sticky piston not pushing evenly on the disc ...
 
My guess is that its yet another attack if the pesky brake dust shield.
 
Ok it's in the garage now. I have the back pads and calipers to do next, so will check the fronts over too.

Shame there is no picture of those rattle springs on Craddock's but will do some more searching. Really wish I hadn't cleaned the calipers so well, if I had left them manky maybe it wouldn't rattle so much, I have also dug out the old calipers to see if the pads are tighter in them.
 
Quick google brought up some photos of the springs, yes they should help.

75p each and £16 postage to the IOM probably :) better think of some other bits I need, won't be hard.

If you've got the coil spring type, they come in two sizes, short ones for the non vented disc and longer ones for the vented discs (as they're thicker). If you've got short ones on a vented disc setup they'll not be pushing the pads apart far enough.

think there are 3 types of calliper.
the old style with large split pins and pin type
 
Rebuilt the back brakes last night, new seals pads etc. then checked the front brakes again.

When you spin the drivers side wheel, there does appear to be a warp on the disk which is lifting one pad on every revolution. I can't see a warp, but it is not right. So I will look to get a new pair of disks and re con the original calipers.

The back brakes had been fitted with a new brake line on the axle. Which was flared with the wrong thread fittings, so I ended up changing the fittings as well.
