Hi all,

Trying to replace my rusty old brake drums with shiny new ones....but having REAL problems getting the drum retaining screws off:

I have tried:

Heat around the screw with a blowtorch, then
Impact driver with a hammer and
Some penetrating oil.

Most have come out but a couple are refusing.

Is it OK to drill them out? Do i really need to have three retaining screws on each drum? Surely one would do?

have you tried tightening it up - in the hope that it twists the head orf

or, heat it, then shock cool it by throwing a couple of litres of cold water on it
 
,whacking them first with suitable punch,chisel it round or drill it out ,you dont have to fit them back ,or at least can drive around till you get some more if you want
 
Try a punch on the end of the slot, knock it round anticlockwise. Drill 'em out if they're a problem, once the heads are off the remains will probably unscrew when the drum is off - if not there's enough screw sticking out to get a pair of stilsons or a stud extractor on it. They're pennies to replace.
 
I ended up getting out my old manual impact driver and a BIG copper faced hammer, the electric impact driver wouldn't budge em.

Be careful when buying new screws some of the ****ty ones I got don't go flush with the drum and make seating wheel spacers/wheels difficult - I had to file em down!
 
Thanks everyone...in the end...I drilled them out...and luckily I didn't ruin the threads. Cobalt drill bits are fantastic used at slow speed.

Strangely..the new drums (not ****Part) only have a recessed hole for one drum retaining screw...the old ones needed three retaining screws.

Anyway..the new drums are on (after degreasing) and a quick test drive shows they all work nicely.....should be ready for the MOT now !!
 
i drilled one bit it took forever, the quickest way was just to use an edge on a small chisel and knock it around until it unscrewed freely, only took a second each time
 
I have this job to do on mine as someone has clearly tried to remove the drums and ripped the head off the screw and now there is nothing there for me to unscrew. Never drilled out a thread before!

File it flush and centre pop in the exact centre,use a bit at least 1mm smaller keeping square all the way through.

you may need to send a tap through after to clean the threads.
 
I wouldn't bother replacing them myself. In theory, they hold the drum on when a wheel is off, but how easy is it to take a drum off when you pull it?
Mine have always needed a bit of persuasion, so they'd be unlikely to fall off while a wheel is off.
 
I never used to fit them on discs either until one day I put the wheel back on and a bit of ****e had fell between the disc and hub. Wheel felt really solid until I got up to speed....

Also, been told but not sure if it is true that you get a nicer wear pattern if the drum stays undisturbed after new pads fitted - may be bollocks though.
