Well I've taken the plunge folks!! Looked at 2 Discoverys this weekend, first was a 300 tdi @ £1400, complete crock of rusty poo, Second was a 98 TD5 this morning advertised for £2.5k, good truck really!

Nice tidy bodywork, 134k on the clocks, managed to haggle it down a bit as it did need some work still, but overall really pleased, ended up paying 2300 which I didn't think was too bad.

Anyway onto the bits I've gotta get stuck Into;

* Passenger side door won't unlock with Central locking.. - am I right in thinking this is a new actuator needed? Tough too fit?

* Hanbrake function - the light stays on even when I drop the lever, if I pull the button in and push it down it goes out but I have to hold the lever down as when I let go it returns to resting position but the light comes back on?! How do these handbrakes work as I really have to pull up on it to get the thing to hold on a hill?! New cable??

Welcome to the D2 fold! Nice original looking example that, price is about right providing the chassis is ok, which if the MoT has been done properly should have been picked up if not.

The door issue is indeed most likely an actuator. Replacement is straightforward but a PITA to do as you need to lift the window frame up to gain access to the actuator. Get hold of a copy of RAVE if you haven't already got it. Thats the dealership workshop manual and is invaluable.

Join the D2 Boys Club forum - its free and there is a huge amount of D2 specific technical knowledge on there, plus many members offer fault code reading/resetting for free to fellow members. That'd cost you around £50 at an independent. Hugo is in your area and is very knowledgeable and helpful.

You'll soon regret buying a D2 though. Especially after you've joined the above forum. There are so many mods that you can do, that your wallet will empty far faster than you can fill it :)

Thanks buddy just joined that forum, yeah chassis looked good, has had some patches done on the rear after a bit was picked up last MOT. I intend to get the wire brush out when the weather gets better along with a tin of wax oil to protect the chassis in future.

I'll say it before some touchy Disco owner does - It's not a truck!

Otherwise welcome to the world of empty pockets and perpetual maintenance.

He's right i'm afraid, you'd have been better holding out for a good 300tdi D1 or getting one of the earlier D3's

Welcome to the world of Land Rover's though :D
