Over 200k miles on it, and there’s a whooshing sound coming from the left side of the engine bay (from driver’s perspective) when accelerating. No fault codes/black smoke, mpg normal for now.

Is there a common place for split on these? I can’t see anything obvious.

There’s a bit of a smell of exhaust on the cabin on start-up; not sure if that’s related.

Have you checked all the hoses first?
Inlet manifolds split, non repairable, shed loads of labour if paying someone else to do the work, dont think manifolds are cheap either.
If you local garage has a smoke machine it will confirm where the leak is coming from.

I’ve checked as far as I can see, which isn’t very far. Smoke machine - good idea.

I’ve been toying with the idea of getting the engine swapped. There’s a certain Disco Mikey on the D3 forum, not a million miles from me who seems to do these things. Maybe it’s time for that, as the rest of the car is pretty good.

Worth it, or not?

If it runs fine then no I would not be swapping the engine, I was going to suggest MMP landover then saw you were over 100 miles away, maybe ring him and see what he suggests
DM has fitted the 3.6 v8 in his D3, vids on youtube

Phoned up MMP and got DM himself! Very helpful chap. He thought, with the exhaust smell, that it might be an EGR/crossover pipe that would mean a body off, but the price wasn’t too bad. Might run it down there.

With the body off he can sort:
- Brake pipes
- The timing chains at the back rattle a bit on start-up.
- I had some grief a while ago from the secondary turbo actuator

Anything else?
