I was thinking of fitting a turbo boost gauge to my disco TD5, has anyone fitted one to theres & if so how & where to.
also does anyone know at what pressure a 2000 disco TD5 boosts too.
need to know this so no what size boost gauge to buy.

Also does fitting a dump valve help in anyway, looked up info on the internet, & it's half yes they do & half no they don't.

some say it helps because it helps keep the boost pressure up by dumping excess air out of the turbo. thus allowing the boost pressure to stay fairly constant when accelerator is closed.

the other half say all they do is make the whoosh sound & do nothing for the actual turbo.
I must admit though I do like the sound of a dump valve

I think instead of reading boy racer forms for your turbo info , you should first search the web for some tech stuff about how a turbo works for and on your engine, the info will explain dump valves and boost pressure and stuff

which will held you know what your asking

Thats my opinion ,you can obviously do wot you want :D
:car::rolly:

What's a dump valve if you dont mind?

what it says it it ,it dumps the boost pressure, petrol engines have throttle valves that close when your foot is lifted ,as such blanking off inlet and turbo so nowhere for air to go stalling turbo, more of an issue on high boost tuned engines, diesels dont have a throttle valve, dump valve make a nice noise when they open making them popular amongst knobs that dont need them

your turbo already keeps spinning by using the wastegate in times of excess pressure which is fine for a relatively low pressure turbo on a diesel, for more high pressure stuff a dump valve should be used but it is better to dump it back into the intake before the turbo so it equals out the pressure and keeps the turbo spinning nicely. If you dump it out to atmosphere all you are doing is making it work a little less well than the manufacturer intended but you do get a nice whoosh noise on gear changes. I would suspect releasing the pressure out to atmosphere on a diesel would probably lose power.

waste gates for max boost when there is full power from exhaust, theres not enough power in exhaust when pedals lifted so turbo could stall easily which is an issue if you want fast response

I have read how a turbo works, I am asking if it will help the turbo fitting a dump valve.
I read that having a dump valve fitted cuts down on turbo wear because it releases excess pressure inside the turbo.

The boost Gauge is so I can see what & where the boost actually comes in and if it drops off boost at any point. also why it doesn't pull away from junctions. see my other post under powered.
I didn't ask for sarcasm. I am trying to figure out why my disco is **** at pulling our caravan. thanks
how can you be a boy racer in something with a top speed of 98mph lol

youve not read and understood very well then ,your diesel engine wont benefit from it ,if you cant feel when boost comes in you need more experience ,boy racer if your just fitting it for the noise which is all you would be doing,if you want more power ensure engine and fuel system etc are well serviced ,then search for how to improve power

Chuckle, James they won't be told-let them carry on

I didn't mean any sarcasm
What I meant was If you read up on it you will find out (as James Has well described )that what your asking is not what you need

The boy racer reference was coz thats wot boy racers fit to there motors

When you know your motor is in a good state of service there is a good thread on adjusting your pump which is worth a look( I think its a V8Jon Thread):D

dont worry there is help on here

A dump valve sounds stupid. Its like the car sneezes every time mr Chav Vin Diesel changes gear..

:mooning:
one of them - a sphincter valve,
or assssshole to those who still dont know.

most wannabe boy racers fit them
(no not asssssholes - but dump valves) to there shopping trolleys to make them sound like race cars, or cheapskates buy some contraption that bolts on your exhaust that whistles FFS!

my disco quietly whistles out its exhaust on idle,
it tells me it want to go for a ride.....:D

You should have figured out already that dump valves are not a desirable fitment on a turbo diesel lol.

Boost gauge is a useful fitment, but only for initially setting up the boost, and then for monitoring general engine heath.

If your Td5 is having running issues, then a better bet is to 'stage 0' it - ie give it a thorough service and attend to any sensor issues. You'll need to get your fault codes read etc. Far too many possible causes to list them all, but consider MAF sensor, fuel filter, fuel pump, vacuum leak, boost hose leak, excesssive oil in intercooler, worn turbo, etc etc. There are tons more possibilities... a Td5 is far more complex to diagnose than a Tdi.

NB Normal standard tune max boost is about 1 bar or 15psi

Dump valves aren't for boy racers... well OK they are :D , but are needed for the serious performance which proper race engines put out. Group B rally cars etc.
However, the TD5 isn't up to those stratospheric levels of performance , even after a re-map.

When does the engine drop off boost? Well keep it spinning over 2000 rpm, even 2500 and upwards and it'll be fine ;)

Look at the throttle mechanisms/inlet restrictions and see if you can see

was it not lancia stratos that first used extra injection/firing just after the exit on turbo as a means for keeping the turbine blades spinning between gear changes resulting in flames out the exhaust ?
now most snarling and growling rally cars use the idea.
