AC stopped working but I havnt used it since last year. New condensor and hose plus a leak test and refill 2 yrs ago so I've potentially still got a little leak OR (leading on to the actual question!) Does the book symbol showing prevent the ac working? The fault is the pot on a blend motor btw.
 
Bridge the AC clutch for a little while to make it run does the pipe get cold?
Yes= you have gas.
No= I guess no gas.
The tri switch was our issue, its down in the front behind the bumper but can be tested, cant remember how it was long before yesterdays coffee ;). But you don't have to remove the bumper to test it.

Look through the wiring dia and it can be worked out, I did and I can be really stupid sometimes:oops:

No gas does not show the book symbol nor does the book symbol stop the aircon working. If not used for a long time the clutch can rust and stick.
 
I don't think I ever switch it off TBH it just does its thing in the background.

It was @romanrob I think, who did quite a detailed ac check list a while back. If the book doesn't stop the ac then I now know I can investigate the ac without having to fix the blend motor pot first.

I'll explain..
Mate had his book on, knackered blend motor(you may recall the post) I fixed that using the motor from a recirculation 'module ' that he wrongly ordered off ebay, only 2 wires, no pot. His book symbol has gone out and stayed out and he has had no ac for 2 yrs.

Lack of gas is the first thing to check for.
 
Off to a garage or is that something I can check or top up with one of them cans?
The cans are cheap and they come with a gauge so that's what I do but I think Kwik Fit in the UK will check and recharge on a no fix no fee basis, someone will know.
 
OK, so pardon my ignorance.
But what actually happens in the depth of winter for example.
Hvac set to 21 degrees each side, AC on then start her up (recirculation on or off?) .
AC seems the last thing I would want to put on.
Should I put this in the 'stupid questions' thread?
I guess it involves pulling dry air in but from where? Will it take longer to get the cabin warm if AC is on?
But if hvac is at 21 degree set point, cold engine, then Shirley the AC won't engage?
I know I'm wrong btw, just trying to understand what actually happens?

I doesn't pull dry air in, it drys the air when it is operating, it only blows cold when asked to (sometimes you have to plead with it)
the temp will be at whatever you set the control to. You will sometimes find the moisture it squeezes out lying in the footwell if you dont clean the drain tubes........
As Keith says it is beneficial to leave it on because it does tend to remove the moisture from the various bits and pieces. If you turn it of all you do is send moist air (if in the UK) around all of the fool proof electrickery ;)

The aircon does not operate below 5C in theory. The air comes in, is chilled and dried and the heated to the selected temperature. It does not take 20hp even when it's engaged and remember, the compressor does not run constantly.
 
I was being tongue in cheek ref 20bhp. I don't know how much they draw but they draw something and the diesel needs all it can get.
