Where there two TD engines put in the range rover 2 in 1996? I have read that there was a 113bhp D aswell as the 136bhp D - where they both BMW engines - i'm trying to work out what one i have so i can buy the correct filter...

no doubt the filter will be the same, just get the bigger one. thats if it fits in the space provided. and it should. i'm sure the airbox was the same on all p38's

There is only one engine, but the oil filter type changed very early, and the air filter a bit later.

If the oil filter cap is black plastic with a large (34mm ish) nut then you have the later type 'big-nut' filter, otherwise its in a metal casing with a small nut on the end which is the earlier type.

The air filter cahnged on TA models I believe, so best thing is to go by your VIN number on this.

but which is which, id like to know so i know what power mine is, ive got the plastic oil filter cap. p reg is it the more or less powerfull

if you read the thread above your last one it explains as to which one you have,he is talking about the oil filter not the oil filler, just in case you mis read it.;);)

As said above, despite the rumours otherwise, there was only ever one type of diesel BMW engine (the M51D25)fitted to the Range Rover P38 by LR. It was 136bhp-ish all the way through from 95-02. There were some minor changes such as mentioned above plus the introduction of EGR and Map sensor (allegedly in 99 but fitted to a lot of late 98MY RR's) but they were aimed at emissions not power, and also it might seem, to make service parts unique to LR.

The confusion comes in when people discuss replacing the engine with ones from the omega or BMW 525tds which had different setups and power outputs from 113(325td through 131 (omega) to 141 bhp(525tds). The RR had the diesel pump and turbo set up for lower end torque (I kid you not :) ) hence the 136bhp.
